I drive to greystones weekly. Has anybody else spotted a big Sinn Fein electoral (?) slogan: it's painted on the shelf of rock near the top of the big hill (to the right as you pass through the Glen o the Downs).

What type of tit goes and defaces a really nice view like that. Doesn't like its the work of kids either

Its been there for 30 years or so. They change the slogan every now and then depending if there is some anniversary or election coming up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

Sorry, I thought it was recent. Has nobody ever thought of cleaning it up? Madness.

maybe they own the land or one of their supporters.

Half the wall fell down last year, so give it time before the other part falls. Then we can all moan about how we miss the old slogans!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭Pat the Baker

That was my favorite half of the wall too.

I remember the first time I saw it being a bit shocked, but now that I pass it on a regular basis, I always look to see if they've changed it!

I guess if you don't really like it OP, you could just concentrate on the road. ;)

Ah yes, the good old AF graffiti. If that ever stops, it will look weird. Its embedded itself into the heritage of the area really.

for years it said "Free Nicky Kelly" but then he was let out so they had to think of some new slogans.

If it bothers you that much don't look at it fix your eyes on the road!!! That slogan has been there as far back as I can remember and it isn't doing any harm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,404 ✭✭✭dogmatix

But it's hard to miss! thats the whole point of it being there to catch our eyes on the way south. I'm assuming the same person who paints those slogans was also responsible for erecting those white crosses in the glen of the downs earlier this year - something to do with the hunger strikes anniversary? I'm not to keen on the slogans either but the wall was a nice feature.

I know, lets remove "Sinn Fein - Building the Republic" and replace it with Stovelid's joke:rolleyes:

Then we can see how many complaints we get :p

My favorite slogan on that wall was "Sack Mack Bring Keano Back"

The first slogan on that wall was "Free Nicky Kelly",that would have went up on it as far as I'm aware in 1974 and was there untill he was released sometime in the 80's.It was for when he was in for the sallins train robbery (he used be in the IRSP)

Republican Slogans on that wall have been there for over 30 years,ye pack of blow ins :p

will be coming down that way tomorrow, will update if they have painted a new grain of wisdom.

Noticed that they had cleaned it on sunday, for a second I thought it had fallen.

I remember the "free nicky kelly" slogan but I also remember it had "in every box of cornflakes" at the end.

    Now thats a joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,515 ✭✭✭RosieJoe

Looks like the slogans are to be a thing of the past! Still no sign of a new one.

Had heard that a Counciller requested that the slogans were removed, maybe in the last year or so!

passed there at the weekend. Still nothing.

Does anyone know if they were made get rid of the slogans.

On another, it would be a great place for a certain austrailian electrical wholesaler

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,404 ✭✭✭dogmatix

And finally a new slogan - something about a full time fire service for north wicklow. They just about managed to fit it into the remaining lenght of wall. And not a shinner, provo, chuck-our-law wording in sight!

Down with this sort of thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

    ...Careful now!

Now that's a slogan with general interest.

    -. . ...- . .-. / --. --- -. -. .- / --. .. ...- . / -.-- --- ..- / ..- .--.

Regarding 'the Wall'...has any one any idea what the wall originally was? My OH has seen a copy of a 200yr old picture and there was a church roughly in this spot. Perhaps this is an old church wall or gravyard wall.

Oh no just had a thought...... Church of Ireland!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,515 ✭✭✭RosieJoe

Noticed yesterday that there is a new slogan up now!

    "Vote No. 2 Lisbon Treaty".

The wall forms part of a parcel of land that Dublin City Council own, within the land is an old break pressure water tank that forms part of the water supply network from Vartry Waterworks in Roundwood to the reservoirs in Sandyford Industrial Estate.
