Which Vostro?

Ok, help needed. I have tried to get this info off the net, but can't understand it. From a lay persons point of view, can someone explain to me if the difference in processor speed is really noticable when only using it for surfing internet, editing photos and editing the odd video.

I've gone through the various Vostro systems. I have a firewire card and 320gb internal IDE drive I want to add whatever system I purchase. I also would like this system to last for a few years, so the ability to add ram is essential - but from what I can gather, all have the capability of going to 4gb.

    Choices are:
    200MT - E6550, 2.33ghz, 1333mhz, 4mb cache, 2048ram, 320gb, 8300GS: €389
    200MT - E4400, 2.0ghz, 800mhz, 2mb cache, 2048ram, 250gb, X3100: €249

Is it worth an additional €140 for the E6550, would you notice much of a difference?

    400MT - E6550, 2.33ghz, 1333mhz, 4mb cache, 2048ram, 320gb, 8600GT: €469
    400MT - E6550, 2.66ghz, 1333mhz, 4mb cache, 2048ram, 320gb, 8600GT@ €519

Is it worth the extra €50 for the 2.66ghz? Is the 400MT really worth more than the 200MT? Also, is it worth paying €130 for an additional 2048mb now? I've heard that some processor's only avail of 2048mb ram, and can't utilise 4gb even if its there?

Anyway - advice / help / guidance would be really appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

The Vostro's use SATA as default not IDE but iirc I believe there is a IDE slot on the motherboard.

If you are not going to be gaming I'd get the
    200MT - E6550, 2.33ghz, 1333mhz, 4mb cache, 2048ram, 320gb, 8300GS: €389

I have a similar system here except I got the x1300pro gfx card. The system is great for general useage, but the graphics card lets the system down for games.
The higher cost of the Vostro 400 is because of the better graphics card and the better PSU, apart from that though, i believe they are identical systems (the 200 and 400). What you could do is just get the cheaper system and upgrade the gfx card yourself.. It will probably run lots of lower power gfx cards but obviously not the 8800ultra etc without upgrading the PSU.

I've heard (and I'm open to correction) that 32-bit versions of Vista can only utilise 3.2gb of RAM, to utilise any more you need to get the 64-bit Vista...

As of now, i really would not bother. 64bit os's are probably around 5+ years away before they are mainstream. If you are really desperate for extra ram, you could add 2x512mb sticks yourself in addition to the 2x1024mb sticks from Dell. This would give you 3gb which is more or less the maximum which can be utilised under 32bit anyway.
