Is there a definitive rule for this anywhere? We were playing a cash game last night, and people would drop out randomly to take phone calls, have some beer, smoke a cig, whatever. We couldn't agree though on what they have to do when they return, whether or not the blinds skipped them. Is there some hard and fast rule we can follow wrt paying the blinds after being awol?

Make a hard and fast rule and stick to it if it is a home game.

In some places this rule is that it is ok to skip your blinds now and then, but do it obviously and you will get warned.

Other places (and this is probably better) if you miss your blinds, when you come back you must either wait for the BB or else post BB and a dead SB to be dealt in, and you can do this from any position except the button which you obviously won't be entitled to.

In Dublin, the first method is usually used though if you are referring to play in a casino.
