Hi I am a first time poster but needed some help and advice.... I have a friend who has just adimitted to she has an eating disorder. Its not anorexia or bulemia its something called BED - Binge Eating Disorder!!! Thing is she has had it for over half her life and is only seeking help for it now. Which I think is amazinly brave. She found a doc who specialises in eating disorders who then referred her to St John of Gods. She went for the appointment yesterday where the psychiatrist told her she didnt fit into any specific area so was unsure how to treat her!!! As she was binging but not vomitting she wasnt bulemic and as she wasnt starving herself she wasnt anorexic. she has a history or depsression and at the moment has bad paranoia and anxiety but doc says she isnt bi-polar but recons she is a bit depressed!!! So she is no better off than before she sought help which enrages me.

This country sucks when u need anything like this. I went through the same when i sought help for my son and its so frustrating and just adds to the stress. So basically wot im asking is if anyone has any advice on where she can go for further help. rite now its like she is against a wall. they have prescribed prozac for now and left her in limbo.

So basically i am just lookin for help from anyone who may have been thru this. who has any idea on where she shud go next. I see her despair and i just want to help her.

Sorry for the long post. and thanks in advance

She is very brave admitting to it & seeking help -- and I wish her the best of luck. I don't have any personal advice.. i googled n assume you have too -- seems Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps.. or psychotherapy...

I'm sure I've not been of much use - -but that site seems to have some useful links etc..?

Is it related to any anxiety illness? I know depression can cause some people to overeat and so on, their way of dealing with it.

Binge Eating Disorder is a horrible thing and is usually a visoucs cycle of ......over eating, feeling like crap, sucidal even, swearing you will never do it again, then going on an all or nothing diet ,last on that diet fairly well for a week ,then go on a major binge. This cycle ususally contiunes like this until it can be broken.

I've sufferd from BED for about 3 years now and i can say that it never fullly goes away but the binges get lesser and lesser as time goes by.I used to average every friday and saturday and now its only once every few months and even then its not that bad.

Op may i ask if your friend is overweight and how is her personal life?I was always more likely to binge when things were going bad for me and i felt overweight and ugly ,,,,,needleess to say the bingeing only made it a million times worse.

Also does she have certain triggers and what food does she binge on?

If you'd rather not discuss this in the open i'd be more than happy if you p'med me :)
