In general teaching will finish on Friday December 7th (this year) (some exceptions) and also some courses will have certain tests/exams/deadlines the following week or beyond so you should check with your department (or look in your course handbook if/when you get it) before booking any travel etc.

Things will kick off again on Monday January 7th (again with exceptions).

College offices are, on past form, going to be officially "closed" from Friday 21st December 5pm to Wednesday 2nd January 9.30am so you can accept that at the very least, you are free at those times! In practice, for most students it's the four weeks after December 7th.

This is the full list of dates etc - I think it's still the version for 2006-07 though so it only covers up to 31 December this year.

If you happen to be doing BESS (and maybe some of the Arts subjects?) you get a reading week half way through the term, so kind of like a mid term break. This happens in two of the three terms in the year, so it's only in the final term that you have to endure a whole six weeks in a row.

It really gets in the way of skiing opportunities. That time of the year would be southern hemisphere skiing as well, that's the best hemisphere!

I've taken the first week off in January every year so far for skiing! Works well for me, except when exams are given back during the first week.

    What about the examination periods?

After christmas and after the year? Is there any more?

End of Michaelmas, End of Hilary, End of Trinity terms. They are 9, 9, and 6 weeks respectively. As for whether you have exams at these times, it'll depend greatly on your course. If you're doing drama, there's the possibility of not doing exams after 2nd year (though I think they're clamping down on that!)

Official exam period will be (based on past practice): beginning on Monday 20th May for four weeks (although most students will finish by the end of week two or three). You will probably receive your exam timetable (assuming your exams are in this official period) some time in April.

Some courses have very different structures for exams, especially in the health sciences.

There is no uniform system for the courses that have (usually minor and low-value) Christmas (or other) exams within the academic year. Trinity essentially operates one major exam period in May/June although for students entering this year, this may well change as the college goes through a promised transition to something resembling semesters and modules.

As I answer to most questions, you'll need to check with your course handbook etc when you do arrive here in October, as there are all sorts of quirks and local practices in effect.
