Also what are the cetchs, will I have to pay aload of intreast? I know i have to pay a €40 government charge but other than that what else is there to know?

Are you serious??? Go to your local bank and apply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,772 ✭✭✭jameshayes

you'll only pay interest on the transactions over 50~ days old.. there is normally no other charges and the best way to get one is through your bank or MBNA... Just be careful... Banks can set you a max limit of 300~euro.. MBNA will keep hiking your max up to try get you to reach it!

Thanks for that. When you say pay intreast on transactions over 50 days old, what exactly do you mean? I wolud have thought the money comes out of your account so you don't have to worry about paying them back. Sh!t this credit card stuff gets to me:(

To start off with I suggest looking up the word 'credit' in the dictionary.

"A contractual agreement in which a borrower receives something of value now, with the agreement to repay the lender at some date in the future. Also, the borrowing capacity of an individual or company."

well you can choose to pay by bill, or to pay by direct debit. I pay by direct debit and find it usefull, it means you won't forget to pay up and end up paying interest

I'm 28 and got my first credit card at the start of the year. I use it almost exclusively for buying stuff online - although i did use it to buy a suite of furniture on it (which made me feel old).

I pay of everything within 2 days after using it - so every bill I've had since Feb has been for the grand total of 0. Friends of mine owe thousands on their cards and have ridiculous limits (given how much they owe).

So given that the original question has been answered.... what is everybody's credit limit? How much do you owe on your card at present?

My limit when I got the card was 5k - I don't ever intend to get near that and I did toy with idea of getting them to reduce it drasticaly - but i figured it could be handy in case of an emergency.

I owe nothing on it. #

[Mods if this is OT let me know and I'll create a new thread. I figured that if i created a new thread it would be merged with this one - so i thought i'd save you the hassle]

Why cant you use your 3v card on eBay? never had a problem with it meself...

I'm thinking it mightn't be a bad idea to put off the credit card idea untill you know more about it.

If it helps, I'll let you pay off mine for a while - just so you've experience with it and know what you're getting into.

I'd be inclined to think you shouldn't get one either. And if you are certain you have to have one, remember:

ONLY USE IT WHEN YOU HAVE TO!!!!!!

Otherwise you'll find youself in a heap of debt with no way to pay it off. The credit limit is NOT a target!

Do they not teach all this stuff in schools nowadays?

I assume you have a bank account, an regular wage income and a basic understanding of how to manage your money????
A quick call to your local bank should tell you what you need to know about credit cards. Or go onto your bank's website....

Also, should this thread be in Biz under Consumer or Online buying?

Firstly, why would ask this on AH? Secondly, go to a bank. I'm sure (if you're elligible) they'd be more than happy to help you get rid of your money. Thirdly, REALLY think about it. Try a debit card instead.

I'm sure if you could organise that then you would have no money worries at all as there are probably enough pervs about to finance whatever you want..

Also, grow up a wee bit.

Also also, I have had credit cards for around 8 years and have never paid a penny/cent of interest, so if you are sensible then it won't cost you anything about mandatory charges (€40 government one).

Credit cards aren't evil till you forget to pay them back. If you forgot to pay the bill one month you will be charged a **** load of money on your next bill (exact % amount and time before charges vary).

Whoever you get your card from will do some checks on you to make sure you can repay any amount that you borrow (which is basically what you are doing, short term loan). The more you earn and the more trust they have in you to repay it, the larger credit limit you'll get.

I just rang my parents whenever i needed one and they were usually happy enough to oblige. Recently got one for myself and i'm almost afraid to use it incase i go mental with it and buy the whole internet. It's so easy to use it, forget about what you bought and spend the money on something else.

Just be sure to pay it off every month and if you use direct debit, that there is enough in the account to cover it. Nothing worse than thinking you've paid it off and then being hit by a huge bill the following month :(

it's an option on the form. it's under payment. you need to pay a certain percentage directly, but you can choose how much. I'm not sure what the smallest ammount is. this is with AIB anyway

Credit card + online banking is a great combo. You can pay it off as you use it, and no big shocks at the end of the month.

A friend of mine uses Laser/Credit card for most purchases, his theory is that if you withdraw €50 from an ATM, and make a purchase for 23euro or so, you can wave goodbye to the other 27euro...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

And remember, if you have €5000 outstanding on your card and you pay back €4090 you still pay the interest on the full €5000! Nasty but that's how they make their money!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 89 ✭✭euph

    is that true?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 999 ✭✭✭Noelie

Yeah they changed the way they added interest a few years ago, Well BOI did.
It used to be just the outstanding amount was charged interest, now if you don't clear it the charge interest on all transactions in the period

Also, how many other countries have a €40 "stamp duty" on credit cards, its the most ridiculous tax.

€10 to have an atm card, 20 for laser.

Cash is much more of a liability, paying for army escorts when transporting it, reprinting five euro notes etc

    None at a guess.

I still have a UK card that I've not bothered to get rid of incase I ever need spare for emergencies with a 3grand limit I think, not been chaged anything for that in all the time I've had it. The 40 notes tax for the honour of having a credit card here is fecking daft though, and that they have it on ATM cards as well.

Quite true. I find if have the money there I'm more likely to spend it on random stuff. If I wanted something for €5 or €10 and I only have laser I'll usually leave it until next time I have cash.

Mr Foot, id like to introduce you to Mr Mouth.

I have never understood the need for a card except for online buying, even at that its only things impossible to get cheap in the real world like flights. Anyone who runs into card debt is an idiot who shouldnt have ever been allowed to leave their mammys house and ought to be oput in some type of care home.

If you check their website, you'd see there's no problem with it. Go to help, click on 'shopping with a 3v voucher' and there's a section for ebay and paypal. No problems there. Perhaps the person on the phone thought you were under 18 or that the cost of the item you wished to buy was more than you had on the card. I've used one on ebay without any issues.

The only issue with using your 3v voucher is "where the merchant expects to receive a credit card from the customer, such as hotel check-in, paying when you pick up rental cars or collecting tickets" or on gambling sites.

So yeah, Flunked wasn't dreaming. Maybe you dreamt the phonecall? ;)

As someone who works in the area, be careful about signing up for direct debits with online companies. Can be hard enough to get them to stop it.
Always pay your full balance to avoid interest, not just the min payment.
And always ring beforehand when you're going to use it abroad, otherwise there's a good chance of referrals...

using 3v on ebay is simple, just register the card on your paypal account for added security. You have to add it as a Visa
