Core Combatives in Ireland

    Hello all,

See the article (page 28) in this months edition of Irish Fighter, it is a review on the Core Combatives seminar we had last April, there is a group photo on it so to all who participated, Well Done!!

Mick Coup is back again for part 2 on the 29th & 30th of September, and there will be a big emphasis of impact power generation, any of you who knows Mick, knows he hits hard and can teach people how to hit harder than they ever had before!!

Please excuse the editorial mistakes on the article (they are outside our control), before anyone jumps on it, I AM NOT A CORE COMBATIVES INSTRUCTOR, I have not yet earned that accolade, but I'm working on it, thankfully Mick does not hand out instructorships easilly, so its well earned and well deserved when you get it.

"The only place Success comes before Work is in a dictionary"

    See you 29th & 30 September..

We should kock heads together the next time, as John Brawn is bringing Den Martin over on the same date as your seminar and Lee Morrison is over the weekend before hand. Just an idea!

Great thinking. I'm very good friends with John Brawn. We were actually talking last night about doing something similar - a weekend with 2-3 instructors covering different aspects of self-defence.

Might be an idea for the new year. Kind of like a combatives weekend. Saves us bumping into each other on seminar dates also.

    Jon,

Always open to suggestions, It would be difficult to organise but probably do-able. Since Mick was awarded "REALITY BASED SELF DEFENCE EXPONENT OF THE YEAR" at the SENI show he is in big big demand internationally, In fairness he did pull out the stops to fit Ireland in for all the Core Combatives fans, so I think if anyone out there wants to train with the best, they should come on down and join in for the weekend..

Stay in touch Jon and thanks,

    David.:)

When you put it like that Dave, I might even turn up for this one myself!

I'm looking forward to the event, especially if the same crowd from last time shows up - I've got a full programme of skills and drills lined up that are guarranteed to hit the spot!

    Thanks for the reply Mick,

Not to give anything away, but if you follow the direction for this seminar as you mentioned to me the last time we spoke, there will be a lot of heavy hitters leaving Sunday evening:D .

Excellent, time is ticking, we are nearly there!! 29th/30th September lads!

To keep this seminar intimate, so everyone gets one to one coaching time with Mick, We are capping the numbers! only a few places left  , don't leave it to the last minute, I don't want anyone to miss out!

    I am sore today!
Had a great time over the last two days, Mick came over with loads of drills and training ideas for us to try out. We refreshed what he did on the Foundation Elements course last time, then went about tuning up the shots themselves and stringing them together on the pads. There were left right transition drills, high to low, elbow to hand, knee to shin............. all building on the previous drill. The pad work was tough work as well, but learning how to feed the pads giving the other guy no thinking to do as to shot choice was one of the best things on the course. A decent pad man makes a huge difference in the quality of the training experience!

Day Two and we had more of the same strikes, just adding more depth and detail to the body mechanics, the science bit behind Impulse vs. Impact forces, Plastic and Elastic energy, and he made every one in attendance a believer when they could feel the force of their own and their training partners shots increase. More fluid hits even when unexpected stuff happens (like a flog to the head from behind) and higher hit rates, more force delivered on target, great stuff!

Sunday evening after another lunch provided by David (cheers again mate, great organisational skills!) we got our go at "Mayhem Drills". Getting put in a ring of bodies, told to attack a target when given a cue to go, close your eyes and Whop! When you get hit you open the eyes and attack your assailant (in this case a couple of lads using focus pads as target), switching targets only when you get hit by the other guy. Good fun but tough work :P And then on to my favourite drill, Motor cycle crash helmets on and lying on the floor facing away from your opponent. On the go signal you get up and attack each other, limited visibility, hard to breath, a struggle to get off the deck, and then a short sharp crunch into the other guy going at 900 rpm firing shots off only to be torn away from each other and made do it again............and again ;D

Overall I had a great time, found a few tweaks to what I'd learnt last time getting a better feel for the kinetic chain and plyometric pre-loading of shots that Mick teachs. All the lads who turned up were dead on, both those I'd met at the last seminar and the new faces.

Big thanks to David Lewis for bringing Mick over again and for laying on a brilliant event. As with last time, I've never seen a better organised seminar. From having lunch laid on, event T-Shirts for all, a huge selection of focus pads, Hammerheads, large impact shields, and crash helmets for the mad stuff! Well done Dave, really looking forward to next time mate!

For anyone into MA and self defense, I would definitely recommend getting to a Mick Coup seminar if you can at all. He's one of the top instructors in the world for SD and physical conditioning. While his material is great for MA folks, it is equally useful for ladies like the petite Caroline who attended this seminar. A volunteer First Responder with the Red Cross, she loved the event and is looking forward to the next time.
