    Hi all

Just interested to know if anyone has worked or knows some one who has worked for the UN. Either in New York or else where. Im a recent graduate with a masters and would like to work for the UN in New York (Visa is not an issue) i think it would be great experiance and a spring board to an international career.

The process to join seems quite complicated and to be honest their website is not very good. There seems to be compeditive exams to join ala the civil service but then only certain countries can apply etc I am really just looking for a start. So if anyone has gone through the process and wants to share please do.

    Thanks

There's a book called 'Emergency Sex (and other desperate measures)' that follows the lives of 3 UN employees at different levels. One's a receptionist/clerical worker, one's a lawyer, and one is a doctor. It follows them through Cambodia, Haiti, and Somalia, among other places.

It's a decent read, if a bit of a bummer!
    This is it here:

They have a small book section in HMV and that's where I got mine.

Just thought you might be interested :) Sorry I can't help you with the job part though!

My old man was an Army officer, did 9 years overseas with various UN and NATO missions. It included a 1 year stint in UN HQ NYC. I got to tag alon to most places which is a handy way to see the world. A cousin of mine was with the perm rep there as well.

They call it the Magic Kingdom, its supposed to make you wonder who they get anything done at all... What career are you looking for out of it? Dept of Forigen Affairs might be a better bet, friend of mine is with them and they get sent off overseas to some very interesting jobs and places.
