    Hi,

During the year I was reading some documentation that said all lot of businesses and colleges/universitys sell their old computers when they upgrade the systems.

What I would like to know is:

    1. Is this true
    2. Where could I buy one
    3. How much

Would I be better off contacting my local college or a few schools and businesses around the place and enquire.

What I want to do is a fairly good computer and put a load of Open Source application on it and mess around with them. Any ideas?

My budget is not that big either. The cheaper the better but having said that im looking for the best available at the best price.

Try Adverts.ie for a semi-decent PC, whats you budget, contact some computer recycling centers they resell the old hardware.

    1. I think most of these are disposed, not worth their while getting them ready to sell. All the software on the PC's would be licensed to the colleges / companies. It woud not be worth their while recycling the PC's.

Would that mean that they are completely blank software wise. Like I wouldn't mind installing open office and Linux etc on them, they would just have to be powerful enough.

Where would the nearest "computer recycling centers" be to Kerry or are there loads about.

from what ive learned, most universities will either give them to charities, or simply dispose of them, with disposal being the majority. sometimes the harddisk is even destroyed, as data is recoverable even after formatting!

Contact the IT department of banks etc. they often upgrade systems and sell off older PC's (Normally to Staff). Its worth a shot

I know that one college does this but you must have a valid staff id... also another college I know of, threw out them and there were students about who were allowed to take left over parts... think it varies from college to college

When I was in college, the IT department refused to sell or give away any of the old computers etc. But, because we were nice to him, he did tells us the time and place that they were being thrown out ;)

It's worth a shot asking. And you might get some other good stuff too!

No. My experience in a Dublin University (>10 years) is we don’t ‘sell’ our computers to anyone. Usually they are reused in-house and when no longer usable by us [depending on condition] either given to local schools, scrapped, given to staff. I don’t think you have any chance of getting your hands on them.

Also, policy is PCs are totally blank when disposed of, ie. hard disks wiped clean, or sometimes even removed and destroyed.

Heres an email I got today. Haven't a clue who they are and have never dealt with them and I don't even know why I'm on their mailing list but maybe they may be of some help to someone. They dont look too cheap though.
