How many calories in...

Blueberry muffins in insomnia? They are the best blueberry muffins ever! They're so incredibly addicting! Just curious, is one a day too much? I don't drink soft drinks and I don't eat any other kind of rubbish like "sweets, chocolate, crisps) or whatever in the day so would this be ok? Also should I be concentrating on how much fat is in one rather than how many calories?

I usually get "unknown foods" and compare them with similar ones. Go into tesco and try and find a muffin of the same size and check it for cals. I would guess it is 400kcal.

Most muffins are going to be junk either way. Too many calories make you fat, be it too much sugar, fat- whatever. I have seen muffins advertised as "low fat", they are only about 5% fat, but are then 75-80% sugar.

Be careful of the sleazy marketing lines on all foods, low fat usually means high sugar, low sugar means high fat!- and be careful of portions sizes, people advertise milk saying "only 4% fat", yet neglect to say many drink it in half kilo portions.

Try learning calorific values yourself, it results in most people making wiser food choices, i.e. will I have 1 muffin, or 4 spicy chicken fillets.

The 400kcal per day is 2800kcal per week, if you were to give them up and not eat replacement calories you could expect to lose almost 1lb per week, since 1lb of fat requires ~3500kcal to be put on or lost

    Workout classes? or academic classes?

They are full of sugar, possibly not too much fat. After a full heavy weight workout you should be getting in sugar and proteins. I used to eat full packs of "healthy living" cakes, these are low in fat and high in sugar, they are not healthy, but I liked them and used them as a "cheat" after working out hard. I would have a strawberry protein milkshake and a big plate of sugary cakes. But after a hard workout you body needs energy to recover.

Later in the day sugary carbs like that are the last thing you need if you are not working out.

Would love to say workout classes but no academic classes!?

Never knew that about been able to have one after working out, I thought that would have defeated the whole purpose of the workout!? Cheers for the advice!

I am really talking about heavy weights workouts, after which your body is trying to build muscle and will be ready to take up simple sugars. They are still not recommended as a "healthy option", many would never touch them, what I am really getting at is that if you are going insist on eating them then the best time is probably after a heavy workout to replenish the body.

The muffin & latte is probably about 600kcal in all, that could have been a fairly large meal in place of that. I dont know what your goals are, or if you are trying to lose weight.

I have lost a fair bit of weight but still eat some junk, and sometimes I have minibinges at parties- I would not do it everyday, and would not plan it. Sometimes I will eat it before or after workouts- so at least I know the calories are going to some use.

Why the obsession with having one every day? Why not once a week as a treat?

About 2.5 years ago I started a new job. For the first month I had a latte and muffin each work day of the week around 11am. I put on a few kg.

Moral of the story ---> Don't have one every day.

Hi Dub Girl. There is no short cut here. This is pure mathematics. The average female needs around 2000 cals a day. if your consuming 600 in one sitting, you have a fair idea of what leeway you have left in relation to your other meals. If the rest of your food adds up to 1400 cals, you'll probably be alright. If it is higher you will begin to gradually put on weight. A sandwich at lunchtime could be anywhere between 300 and 1000 cals. Throw in some excercise and you'll counteract it somewhat. Its this simple. I think you already knew that muffins aren't the optimum choice, but eaten sensibly, they won't make you fat. I love muffins but I can't remember the last time I had one. They are pure sh1te!

I don't understand the love for muffins.

Now if we were talking about starbucks giant chocolate chunk cookies or chocolate chip shortbread I could understand...

Isn't that the mantra of pro-anna sites (pro-anorexia)?

I hear it was nothinbg tastes as good as lean and mean feels.

OP, I'm guessing that your just waiting for someone to say, yeah, small cakes are grand for you, all the top athletes use some sort of cake based snack on a daily basis. It's a cake, it's a desert, it's mostly sugar and fat. It's a treat for a week of hard work in the gym.

Are you happy with your current physique and your control over it?

No - keep it as a treat.
    Yes - knock yourself out.

in all fairness, one muffin a day is not gonna throw your system out of wack.its not gonna make you fat!!! as you said you dont eat any other ****, drink soft drinks or have a generally bad diet.

your too young to be orrying bout **** like this.eat what you want, drink what you want and look how you want.dont be woorying about peoples opinions of you.everything changes once you go to college and start working. live life to the full while you can!!!

one of these muffins everyday could easily make you fat if you have a poor diet and have very few activities in your life

A very important distinction here is that someone like Hanley who is lifting big big weights several times a week could probably eat one with little to no side effects but someone who does no exercise and has a crap metabolism from a lazy diet will see the effects of a 600kcal muffin

yeah you are too young until you get to the age of 28 and you have a beer/muffin belly that covers your genitalia. and yes everything does change when you go to work. you wont have anytime whatsoever to go to the gym or eat well and you'll look like all those other corporate hotshots who sport that desirable 'skinny fat' look. its great. and lastly, never forget that living life to the full constittutes eating one muffin a day rather than not working out and attaining the physique of your dreams. thats livin'.
