    Folks,

Galway and Cork have their own film clubs for IFI type movies.
Does anyone know of an equivalent in Limerick ?
Even commercial cinema in Limerick is more restricted than its counterpart in Dublin . . .

Check out the Belltable Film Club. They used to show films when I was down there. I dunno what theire situation is now though with Savoy shut down.

I think it's Brendan in the Belltable that organises it.

No Gonzo - the Belltable just puts on shammy trash movies - 1 average one for 10 bad ones.
(The whole Belltable is banjaxed for years anyway. Saw only one good play in last 10 years.)

I mean the real deal - all the stuff that the punters at IFI get every week.
No reason it couldn't come to Limerick.

The IFI don't actually show too many EXCLUSIVE new releases. Nearly half of their monthly commercial releases gets shown in other cinemas such as CineWorld and the Screen. One or two releases each month is usually a classic movie reissue.

    So what ?
Whatever they have is on another plane to what's on in Limerick.
Omniplex Limerick doesn't show many that Omniplex Cork or Dublin show.
That's where we are with it, man.
Good new releases (exclusive or not), golden oldies, re-mixes, re-edits, whatever - Limerick just needs good movies.

I dunno, I saw manys a fine film at the Belltable Film Club -Donnie Darko, 101 Reykjavík and Breakfast at Tiffanys at Christmas (which was magical).

Beyond that is there an audience in Limerick to watch these movies and make it worthwhile for organisers?

Culture - of its very nature - is something that must be cultivated to some extent in a any community.
But there is a basis for believing that an audience exists for good films.
There are lots of people in the country pi**ed off with the notion that work, family and sport are all that there is to life. There is a big university in Limerick, no longer just a technology/business based institution. I know a share of UL staff who'd be going to IFI were they in Dublin.
But not just them. Rest of us want something to think about as well, something to inspire, move and fascinate us. And those who are into the art and production of film too.
Sure there's an audience for it.
It's the availability of a suitable venue that I'd be worried about.
Please don't suggest the Belltable for this.

I didn't ask if there was an audience for this. Obviously there's an audience if you wanna see these films. I asked is there an audience there to make it worthwhile for organisers.

Films reels cost money to ship. Projectionists need to be paid. Venue needs to be rented. It's not that cheap to host these movies and on top of that rights need to be cleared with distributors and marketing needs to be done. More costs.

Why don't you approach the Omniplex or Storm and see if they'd be interested in getting involved in something like that? Perhaps they'd allow it in one of their smaller screens where the screening facilities are still decent.

Maybe if you got a petition signed to show that there's enough interest then they would be even more interested. Contact the Arts Council and ask if there any funding available to cover some of the costs. Maybe they'd come on board as sponsor.

I agree with you in that there should be more available to regional people but I don't get why you're raggin on the Belltable. Fair enough, you don't like the venue but at least they're trying to do something with less mainstream films.

Best of luck with getting one sorted. It would be really nice to be able to go back home and see something that wasn't mainstream fare every once in a while.

Clearly Film_Gonzo does not live in Limerick.

What age are you, boy ?
Petitions to Suleyman the Magnificient would be a better plan.
Arts Council don't give a damn.
The Belltable are more of an obstruction to cultural development in Limerick.
Can't put many bums on their own seats with the stuff they put on.

Yeah. Takes a bit of work though.

Of course it's clear that I don't live in Limerick. I did say that it would be nice to see a non mainstream film when I go home. That'd be Limerick. Where I'm from. And where I lived for many years before moving.

Obviously you've gone down these routes and were turned away and are not just bitterly assuming that there's no point in trying due to some preconcieved notion that nobody cares about anything but you.

And at least I'm trying to be helpful and suggestful and proactive and not just sitting bitching about it on a public forum where nobody has any real say to change the matter.

Well it's good to know you're on the case. Somebody we can rely on to get things done and not just be another mouth with no action to back it up.

    Come on, prove yourself boy

would it possible to do what pravda do here in dublin....get a decent film shown on a monday. we used to go there and watch stuff like city of god, Zatoichi and so on there...enjoying a pint or two at the same time..

They used to do that in The Old Quarter back when I was living down there but whenever I went to a screening there was nobody there. Again it's a question of realistic interest as well as a venue.

The Belltable will undergo a major revamp in the next year or so, it finally owns the building it's based in. One of the revamps will be the installation of proper cinema screen and sound, as opposed to the largely amatuer stuff they have to put up with now.

For what it's worth, I've seen many excellant films in the Belltable, or the old Central cinema before it was redeveloped, even allowing for the very poor conditions of the facilities.

Yes, we can line up and knock the Belltable, and ridicule their efforts, but at least they are making an effort, not whinging on online boards about it. If you've an issue with them, have you ever considered joining them and trying to bring about change, or do you want someone else to do the work for you?

There are also proposals for a proper arthouse cinema in the old Theatre Royal, but imo, it'll be years before anything comes of them.

Not whinging and doing something is a fair point...but doing what???
Belltable isnt particularly big..they need more space to make a proper impact on the city
