Order of a raffle

I just want peoples opinion on this, I am locked in a dispute with an organisation over a raffle which took place recently, the draw was limited to one ticket per household, so I bought a ticket.

I was the first out of the hat yet I was given 10th of 10 prizes, I am of the opinion that if you limit the entry to 1 entry per house, you must give first prize first, simple maths, more people in the draw equal opportunity for all to win top prize, ie you can not say "Here a bottle of wine now you cant win the weekend away".

First prize should be drawn 11 votes

    First
    0% 0 votes
    Last
    100% 11 votes

shouldn't limit the tickets, but I would reckon start small and work your way up

    First I would have thought.

"How many will I put you down for?"
    "1,000!"

It depends. If the person drawing the ticket said "this is for 10th place" before taking the ticket out I would be happy. If they took the ticket out and then said, this is for 10th place I might be a bit pissed off.

most raffles will take 1st place prize out last to add to the excitement and tension

Important thing to remember is tickets were limited to one per houshold it was run by residents Assoc, compare actually made a mistake by saying "And first prize goes to...." and then was corrected by organiser.

i dont see how this would make a difference. usually in a raffle the judge or whoever is pullin tickets will say

"and the winner of the 10th prize is.."
    pulls ticket
    "joe blogs"

But thats what happened I was called as 1st prize winner and then he was corrected that i was 10th

First prize last, with a drum roll

Is this possible the dullest thread ever to hit AH?

I agree with biko: first prize goes last, to build up suspense.

Any raffle I have ever seen drawn pulls the first prize out last, otherwise people will lose interest. You want to spend the whole time wondering if you'll win the super hamper with the rover biscuits and bottle of jameson. I've never seen the first ticket pulled receiving the top prize... sorry though! What did you win for 10th prize? What was first prize?

Advice to OP, get over it. And just to piss you off even more. I won first prize in a raffle during the week. First ticket out of hat. :D

It's the exact same probability so it shouldn't matter where you were drawn, at least you came out at a profit

I've always remembered them being the first ticket drawn gets the 1st prize

What the local GAA club does is, puul out the first ticket, put it in an envelope, then the second, put it in an envelope. blah blah blah until the tenth prize. Then they read what was in the ninth envelope, eighth envelope etc til they get to the first. That means the first out of the hat wins AND they get to build up to the first prize. Everyone wins! (unless your ticket wasnt picked out)

Em ... well I suppose I see his point in one way ... if there is a limit of one ticket per household, and you are drawn for 10th prize, then you have no chance whatsoever of winning a better prize (unless they threw the ticket back in, which I doubt).

That said, most draws I have seen draw lowest prizes first.

(ColHol's would seem like a good way of satisfying everyone, all right)

Being a logical type of fellow, I can see the OP's gripe. I think ColHol's method should be made mandatory :D

It should be done like this -

"We have 10 prizes to give away. People who win prizes 2 to 10 are still eligible for the main prize."

After all, you buy a ticket to win the main prize. You should not be excluded because they gave you a bottle of wine (or whatever.)

Saying that, it's incompetence on their part rather than anything else, and I would imagine arguing with them isn't going to get you anywhere.

Another solution would be first ticket out get the first prize.

well its not cast in stone or anything

but i like the OP would have taught that the first drawn would get the first prize, but then again maybe its a new thing going from 10th to 1st.

what was the first prize by the way??

Did you not have a thread about this a while ago in the gambling forum. You were told then that it could be done like that and after about 5 pages you choose to ignore it all.

If it wasnt you sorry, you should check out the thread over there it explains it all.

Yeah, I would have thought that first prize is pulled first. After that's been decided it's of minority interest (overall) for the minor prizes.
