As of today new prices for sky packages take effect. You can now specify the amount of Mixes you require and no longer have to take 2, 4 mixes etc.

    Details as follows:

    1 Mix €20 per Month
    2 Mix €22 per Month
    3 Mix €24 per Month
    4 Mix €26 per Month
    5 Mix €28 per Month
    6 Mix €30 per month (50cents reduction)

Sky world mix has increased from €66 to €68 per month

Sky+ and Sky HD equipment prices remain unchanged.

There is an offer of a Sky HD Box with €150 off at the minute - though that could be because we've been Sky customers for 6 years (at least that's what the letter said :D)

That offer is only available directly from Sky and not from retailers

Isnt it an awful rip off. How in Gods name can they justify increasing their prices when they show the same crap year after year?

Hmmm, could do with dropping a mix. Or two. The even numbers drove me mad when first getting Sky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,905 ✭✭✭steveon

I think they will use the same excuses as every1 else, inflation, cost of production but I agree its about time Sky dropped a lot of channels stopped repeating stuff or simply moving it from one channel to another and offer better value for money...

I think they have done something write with the mix deals however...as I often have problems when signing people up as they often wanted 3mixes instead of 4 for example...

What notification did Sky give regarding the new prices?

I would have imagined that there was a letter in July sky mag, not that i read it. It goes in the bin unopened each month.

What about the people who are on a basic package and do not get their Sky mag, how are they supposed to know?

After being ith SKy for nearly 4 months we only received one mag and that was 3 days ago and it was the August episode!! So they should have sent letters out to everyone rather than expect the sky guides to get to the houses!!

The repeating is no different from what they've done for years. The only difference now is they've so many channels they jumble it all up to fill the schedules. I'd say the prices are close enough to inflation (if not a little less??).

    A standard letter prehaps?

I was unaware of the price rise till I checked my bank account.

There is quiet a big difference now, people can now switch to FTA and recieve a lot of good quality entertainment channels rather than pay $ky their high prices for showing crap everyday.

What about the people who are on a basic package and do not get their Sky mag, how are they supposed to know?

I was on cheapest package (2 mix). Is there a way to get them to stop sending that rubbish magazine and thus do a small help to environment and brain?

It's hardly worth saving 2 Euro a month to have 1 mix. But I can't think of anything in a 3rd Mix pack worth paying 2 Euro more for. I'd guess some might go for Knowledge + Kids + Variety packs.

We have plenty of FTA receivers and Multistat fixed + Motorised too, so really only wanted the Knowledge pack for Discovery, Animal Planet and Nat Geo.

If there was true "a la carte" then some of the rubbish channels might go to wall and the remaining might improve. Honestly TV was better quality ion 1970s & 1980s when we only had 3 to 4 UK channels. There is not enough content for 800.

Some old shows I might watch are only on during daytime, but I'm not rushing in to SkyHD or Sky+. On the PVRs we do have (PC + sat card and ReelBox) we rarely record and less rarely play back.

I have the Sky World package and the price you pay is a rip off if you don't watch certain stations. I could downgrade and get 5 mixes for €28 that's a good drop in price but there has to be a catch otherwise everyone would drop things like the kids and music channels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,956 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

I now pay €58 for 6 mixes plus Sky Sports.
So thats effectively €28 for Sky Sports alone.
Thats could be the final straw for me I think.
I tried Setanta in June, they offered me 3 months for the price of one.
Rang up the other day to cancel and they gave me 3 more months at half price.
That will be €45 for 6 months viewing.
Sky have some cheek putting up their sports subs after all the events they have lost.
Then again what would u expect when Sky pay £5m a match for Super Sunday's like ,Wigan vs Derby.

Did they really lose that much sport though?

With regards to soccer, they're showing more live games this season on Sky Sports than they did any other year. They just shut down Prem+ as Setanta won 2 packages.

But, I suppose as the cost of sports TV rights gets crazier every renewal time, so too will the costs of subscriptions go up.

I'm sure I read somewhere before, that even if you don't subscribe to Sky Sports, part of your subscription still goes towards the running of the sports channels. Not sure if it's true or not, but wouldn't surprise me.

€38 for Sports and Movies. Madness.

I take it mixes do not include movies?

I find the concept of mixes baffling.

Mixes don't include the Movie channels. Mixes are categories of the standard entertainment channels. The Sports and Movies are referred to as Premium channels.

I'd love to know what percentage of Sky's budget is spent on Premiership football.
    I'd say its a ludicrous amount .

Yep same here, I'm want to drop 'Sky World' and get the '6 Mix' deal (with no sports or Movies... just dont have ther time anymore) but I cant find info on what else I will lose as it's a lot less to pay each month. Does anyone know what 'Sky World' has that is not part of the Mix's ? as I cant find info on the Sky website.

Its just Sky Sports 1, 2, 3 and Xtra and the 10 or so Sky movies channels, everything between 301 and 314 (or whatever the last number before Film4 is)

If you have Sky World, HD, Multi-Room and Setanta you'll be paying €116 a month for TV.

I just rang up and removed three entertainment mixes and it reduced my monthly bill to €64 from €68

    A whopping €4 a month saved :(

    That's very wierd.

I was checking it on Sky's online order thing, and it seems to be right. €68 for Sky World. If I remove 1 mix, price goes down €2. If I remove a 2nd mix, price goes down another €2 to €64. But, if I remove a 3rd mix, price doesn't alter! It stays at €64! It drops another scabby €2 for dropping a 4th mix.

And you need a visit to a psychiatrist:)

Sky has the whole mixes /packages thing very well worked out.

It's designed so you are best off choosing either the top mix package or top premium package. Anything else isn't really worth going for (for most people anyway).

NTL is at least €26 a month for Digital TV - this is what Sky are competing with

    NTL Max + DVR = €38.50
    Sky+ with 6 mixes = €30

and posts on the Cable forum would suggest NTL's DVR is pretty flakey so far (though at least they can record UTV).

The Movie channels are a ripoff though - I have them for free at the moment and there is the odd good film on them, but I won't be paying €28 extra a month for them!

But if you look at it the other way and want at least three mixes you can then get a fourth mix without any extra cost!! Generous those Sky people!

We should really though be able to get Sky movies/Skysports and the bonus mix without having to get any of the other six mixes for a realistic price , ie. Sky world price- mix price = €38 per month. Sky may be getting slightly more flexible but we are still being force fed channels we dont really want/need!!

Ok currently I have Sky World but want to cancel my movies.
So i presume I'll just go for the 6 mix + Sports Mix.

Does anybody know how much I will save and will I lose any other channels other than the movies?

    Thanks for that loyatemu.

I presume if I get rid of the News mix I will still get Sky News as its FTA?

    Many thanks again.

Yes, you'll still get Sky News, CNN, etc. Though you'd lose Fox News and Sky Sports News, Eurosport, etc.

Is there anywhere on the the internet you can find out exactly what you pay for with these mixes? Im interested in the financial and stockmarket channels. Do I need to pay for the news mix to get these too?

Tbh, If I had a choice, movies and sports would be gone tomorrow as I have absolutely no interest in them. The only problem is that I has multiroom and the old folks like their sports and films. I do agree it is very expensive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 312 ✭✭Cuchulain

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Well I just taken Sky Movies 1 +2 , News & Events Package and Sky Sports 2 from my €68 Sky World package.

I now pay €45 for the 5 mix + Sky Sports 1 package saving myself €23 a month.

Think I'll use that to purchase Setanta subscription :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,330 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

the news and events package is useless (unless you really want Eurosport) - BBC News24, Sky News and CNN are all available free anyway.
i also have Sky+ would I have to pay extra for that if I go for 5 mixes + Sky Sport 1?

you've probably already found this out, but there is no longer any charge for Sky+ if you are a Sky subscriber.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭redman

Thanks for the prompt, dropping off those movies(really didn't like that new set up) and some of the others....

going down from 58 to 26! so back to xtravision for new uptodate hits !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 761 ✭✭✭grahamo

I've had the Sky World package for years. Its cost me a fortune over the years. I've still got the same bog standard crappy digibox. Why can't sky look after their loyal customers with say.....a free sky+ box. Then I'd be a happy camper!:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Any attempts being made by sky to stop people from dropping movies/sports?
