I am typing this on the ianrod eireann dub to tralee service.and its a bleeding disgrace.the carriages are prehistoric and they remind me of the clapped out school buses we had.And my ticket cost 62e. Unreal. The train left at 6.30 and wont be in tralee til way after 10.a bus is quicker. The trains in the uk make ours look ridiculous. I am going to japan soon i hope and a tokyo to osaka shinkansen (bullet train) costs 80e and does 300km/hr. When is ireland going to grow up. Im sick of the state of the country. Its like its forever standing still

Seriously, have you endured a train journey in England?

3.5 hours Dublin to Tralee doesn't seem that bad, it is 300 Km, unless the bus can do an average of 100 K/H and avoid all traffic it'll take longer - Infact it'll take 6 hours with a change at limerick.

Essentially, what I'm trying to say, is stop moaning, or buy a car.

The Tralee to Limerick journey is worse than Dublin to Tralee. If you go from Tralee to Limerick via train, you have to get out at Mallow and wait for the Cork to Dublin service to collect you, then get out at Limerick junction and wait for the Dublin to Limerick service to collect you. It takes around 6 hours (IIRC).

You are clearly on a Mk2D carriage. Don't worry they will be all gone by the end of October at the latest. After that it will all be Mk3s Mk4s and the 22K class intercity DMUs.

IE actually have one of the most modern train fleets in the EU.

Then why are they always so fecking useless.
I commute every day on clapped out boneshakers that are invariably late.

Feck the carbon foorprint i am going back to driving after this shower.

:D:D :D Every day, 9000 trains travel the SBB’s 3000km network. The 9300 employees of SBB Infrastructure are responsible for ensuring that all these trains stay on the tracks and arrive safely at their destinations:D :D:D

    http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/infrastruktur.htm

Now that's rail travel how it should be.

I don't think the rail service is so bad in this country. Just wish there was more destinations though.

Nonsense! That's like saying the DART service is not that bad, pity there's not more destinations.

DART is no good for Finglas, Drumcondra, Ballymun, Cabra, Inchicore, Ballyfermot etc,., etc.!

They could build new rail lines all over the country, but the NIMBY's would be out in force.

"They" had rail lines all over the country before they ripped them up. Cabra is a good example as is Harcourt Street.

I doubt it. And they're estimation that 99% of their trains arrive at all is a load of balls. I've been getting those commuter trains for the last year and i'd say nearly once a week at this point there's something wrong with them.

Yeah, I was actually thinking further afield.
NIMBY's in Cabra would still be out though, if those rail lines were to be replaced.

Train over bus every time for me. They could do with lowering the ticket prices a tad, though.

I remember when the Mk2ds were the latest and greatest. Presumably then that the Limerick Junction-Limerick run is no longer using the Mk2As hauled by 121s? Wasn't that long ago I was on it, surely?

    What was that old song?

Are you right there, Michael, are you right?
If we're lucky, we'll be there by night.
    It all depends on whether
    the train'll hold together.
And it might, there, Michael, and it might!

OK, I think that was for the West Clare, not IE, but still.

I don't get Iarnrod Eireann. I asked for a single ticket from A to B the other night, and the dude behind the counter gave me a return. I said: "No, I just need a single, thanks". He told me that a return ticket was cheaper.

    Wtf?

sometimes they have special weekend rates or day rates (that they dont promote very well) which works out cheaper.

For a day return it's the same price.

OP: Ianrod? As in road made from people called Ian?

Daddio: You're absolutely right. The standard announcement in Maynooth tends to begin 'The train now arriving at - platform - one - is the - delayed...'

As to the service, they had some old (comfortable, if smelly) trains on the Sligo line. They replaced them with the noisier, smaller, shakier Commuter trains, and charged us an extra fiver for the privilege. The seats that don't have an alleged table between them don't have enough room, and there aren't nearly enough for crowded intercity trains.

My biggest issue is with prices on the Intercity bar and snack bar shops, though. €2 for a warm can of coke?! Seriously?!

Some bus routes are a shambles. However dome train routes aren't much better.

But take the Westport train line versus the Ballina bus.
    Bus journey time: 4hrs (€28)
Train journey time: 4 hrs (€45)

    Distance is only 150 miles.
Cork is 160miles and only takes about 2hrs 50mins.

And when getting the train, you probably have to change for the Luas/90 to get to town (more time) or get a taxi (more robbery). Whereas the Bus drops you by O'Connell bridge beside almost all bus routes.

Train: able to smoke on the old trains and buy drink on them. New trains, you can only drink on them.
Bus: have to hide the drink.

New trains... bad, but faster than a bus. Train from Carlow to Heuston is about an hour. 2 hours on the bus. Prefer the train. To Sligo... bus is long, train short. Also, able to pop out at the major train station for a quick smoke.

On wednesday morning I got a train from Thurles to Dublin.
E32 one way. Expensive enough, especially since I wasn't coming back.
To make matters worse, there was no ticket check.

Nope. Rods made from people named Ian.
