Message To Fans of English Teams

Basically I think that all Irish people should support Celtic as they are a great club with a strong Irish identity. In northern ireland thats the case. They have held onto their Irishness and haven't started supporting teams in a country that used to send its troops over to shoot civilians and intern innocent people.

Go to parkhead and be with your own people. Don't worship England and everything English. When you support Celtic you are following a team that you have a claim to, a team that plays in Scotland but is Irish to core. Was started by the Irish for the Irish and has turf from Donegal planted in it whenever there is a new stadium.

In wednesdays Champions league qualifier, the club had a 10ft Tricolour waved on the track behind the goal. In Seville there were more tricolours than Porto fans. Why choose Spurs over a team like this? Have you no patriotism?

There is a huge amount of bigotry in scotland and people with Irish roots have had to put up with so much for many many years. We have stayed proud of our Irish parents and grandparents and proudly sung in defiance against the bigots.

We have united as Celtic fans and have held the tricolour high when there was so much adversity against the Irish in Britain. Personally I have endured years of 'fenian bastard' and 'mickey tim'.

We thought that we had the support of Ireland behind us, but it appears that that is not the case. It appears that the vast majority couldn't give a toss, which is a real shame. They would rather pander to the cash rich English Premiership who are doing what the English have always done - building an empire than robs from the rest of the British Isles.

Ok, we dont play in a fancy league or sign world famous players. We still fill a 62000 stadium each week and took more suporters to a european final than Manchester and Liverpool combined. But we are an Irish club that every one of you has a claim to, and I think that its a real shame that so many dont seem to appreciate that.

I'm not saying you shouldn't support your local team. I think everyone should do that. I just think that if you want to follow a bigger European side you should look to the green, white and gold of Celtic and not the Union Jack of a premiership side.

I support a club founded by Irish Catholics who wanted a sport they could play in a cricket-mad county, founded in the back room of a bar called O'Neills. They're English, mind; and yet still the only professional football team in their county.

Also, if you want to support Irishness in football, you could always, you know, support an actual Irish team, maybe? Or is that too horrific a suggestion for the glory hunters who think football needs to be played by 60k+ a week players to be "good"?

Well I have been a Celtic supporter all my life, they are a great team. Plenty of people in Ireland like them. This one time I was at the Ibrox and it was Rangers against Celtic, Celtic won and afterwards I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and said your moving with your aunty and uncle in Bel-Air, I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror! If anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought nah, Forget it! Yo home to Bel-Air! I pulled up to a house about 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabbie yo holmes smell ya later! Looked at my kingdom I was finally there, To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air!

No gold in the Irish flag. Must have an association with some other country.

Oh the hated engerlish. Woe is us. Bet down we were for X amount of years. An beal bocht or whatever. Let it go. Give it a rest FFS. Sod that, give the rest of us that have grown up and moved on a rest. Smacks of woeful immature insecurity. Arguing over the rights and wrongs of supporting one club over another in a British league in a sport with English origins for the sake of some daft idea of "Irishness" is like two bald fúckers arguing over a comb. Having a chip on both shoulders does not a well balanced chappie(or chappess) make.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

That just smacks of being pissed off about supporting an English team who probably aren't doing too well this season.

I like Scottish shortbread. Am I a bad person?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

No. You're a bad person because you're from the far end and you once pointed out the truth to me. Although the latter doesn't really make you a bad person, just well, umm, Yeah, you were right.

Hmm, Arsenal have had lots of great Irish players down the years. None now, but their head of youth devolopment is Irish. Is that enough Irish history? Where do you draw the line? All English clubs have some Irish connection. Even Rangers do.

If a team plays in a foreign league then its all the same to me - no difference between Scotland and England, Celtic or Rangers. i do like Celtic because of their Irish background, but I don't consider it a question of my patriotism whether I do or not.

I don't support anyone in Irish league because Cavan don't have a team.

They aren't Irish. True, they're not english, but they're still foreign, so you can get the f**k off your high horse.

You are giving out to other twats for supporting foreign teams, but think that your one is special?

Go support your counties GAA team. Or STFU and GTFO.

Hibs have a stronger connection to Ireland than celtic. A club may have been founded by irish ex-pats 100-130 yrs ago but there is no resonances of that today due to the fact that each team, english, scottish.irish contains some international players. They bring fierce skill and variety to the game. Some people can take so much pride in their identity that it can border on the sectarian if it is left get out of hand. football is a beautiful game that bridges cultures. i support Hearts in the SPL since i was a child (due to the fact that my mother lived in Edunburgh and they used to play some decent football - and for no other reasons!) I also support arsenal (which has mostly an international squad).

I not going to even pretend I know anyhting about football OP, but imo the vas vast vast majority of Celtic supports are skangers. Not once have I met anyone who supports that wasn't a scobe with a filthy ronnie.

In fact it's only useful so you can dress your girlfriend up in it so she looks like a hawt skanger of filthy bedroom antics.

If the OP was a true patriot he wouldn't even consider supporting a "foreign game", shurely?

And I thought that I was the only one!

The only reason that more Irish people support Celtic than actual real-life Irish teams is because Celtic are more successful than any Irish teams

I see plenty of Skangers wearing Celtic shirts, this does not make them Celtic supporters just kids trying to find an identity for themselves.
I am a lifelong Celtic fan and am certainly no Skanger.

Well done though for your well thought out contribution.

This is After Hours. If you want a super serial resonse take it to the Soccer forum. you have a low post count so i'll assume your new and don't know your way around yet. Here, in AH I would gather your thread will have about 2 pages before it decends into chaos and way to many tired 'YOREMA' jokes.

Well said! A lot of the people who wear Celtic jerseys (These are not to be confused with the bona fide Celtic fans who know a bit about the game) wouldn't be able to name a couple of squad members. I'm not a Celtic fan but have travelled to see them play. More than can be said for your average 'Celtic Jersey wearer'. (Again not to be confused with Celtic fan).
As for irish connections, The likes of Man. Utd., Arsenal etc. have had many Irish players in their squads down the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭Rob_l

The Taoiseach of this fine nation of Ireland himself Mr Bertie Ahern is a Man United fan and if the Chief of Chiefs supports them thats the best possible Irish connection I have heard in this thread.

So ergo Man united are the official Team of ireland
