Is EHIC necessary with travel insurance?

We're off to Spain next month and SWMBO has asked me to organize EHIC card(s). Thing is, we have VHI health insurance and a family annual travel insurance policy already. Will the EHIC offer us any advantages over and above the cover we already have in place?

For those who don't know, the European Health Insurance Card has replaced the old E111 form that used to entitle you to health treatment in other European countries.

    Thanks in advance.

I have both. It's about options, I suppose. You'd probably get faster treatment initially in a public hospital and your travel insurance can kick in after that if the need arises.

I have 'em all -- VHI, annual travel insurance, and EHIC.

I think mikedragon32 is right about easier access to public hospitals.

But the clincher for me is this: it's so easy to get the EHIC (send in one simple form) that it seems pointless not to, and I'm happy with the belt-and-braces security it gives me.
