DS... is it worth it?

I already have a PSP, but for some reason I'm thinking of getting a DS. But since I have a PSP, is it worth getting a DS since the PSP can do what the DS can do and more (apart from touch screen)? Not to mention it looks better, it plays better, better graphics, better homebrew, films, portable TV, IR, massive wide screen (better then the double-screen IMO), you can record videos and take photos on it and ofcource listen to the radio...
Incase you forgot the question :D.... is it worth getting a DS when I already have a PSP that does all I want?:p

    well
1,not as easy to break :p
    2,longer battery
    3,able to play gba games
    4,more games
    5 r4 cards:D

well thats all i can think of being an owner of a psp and ds lol but the psp is best for multimedia and whatnot but ds has way better games and more choice

Well, I don't own GBA games, only the original Gameboy game, and in my opinion the games on the DS are not my type, and it isn't about quantity its quality. But I still don't know why I want one. And I don't have a fúcking clue what a R4 card is, or what it does for that matter...

    R4 is a homebrew thingy!! ;)

Its a great system, some ood games and deffo worth it!!

I think the PSP's homebrew is supposed to be better, and you don't need the dish out money to get a different card...

Not much point in coming onto the Nintendo forum saying how much better the PSP is to the DS and asking us to convince you otherwise either, but sure there ya go!
If you like your PSP then don't bother with the DS. I got the DS cause I couldn't see the point in buying all the PS2 titles again just to play them on a portable.

Do you know why you want a DS? Maybe there's something special about it that appeals to you, even though your PSP does everything you want and more... Maybe that's why the DS is so popular, eh? TBH if you're a PSP fan and go for the standard run-of-the-mill games I don't know what you'd do with a DS, just stick to your PSP and PS2/3... OTOH, maybe you'll grow to like it if you give it a serious try and don't sit there thinking "oh, the PSP has a better screen" or "oh, the PSP has a camera". Remember the PSP also has a heftier price tag and its drive is based on moving parts akin to MiniDisc.

The R4 card enables the use of MicroSD cards to play mp3s, movies, text files and whatever software others have written. It's a sweet machine and not really direct competition for the PSP. For me that's fantastic as the MicroSD card works in pretty much anything else I have - MP3 player, phone, Wii, camera, PC and so on, so all files are interchangeable between all my stuff...

    DS homebrew IS better

    It's not really though,

PSP emulators are a lot nicer,

SNES on PSP is perfect really.

i had a psp, homebrew was good but i found i never used it. had an mp3 player and didnt want to wait hours to convert films.

bout a ds on holidays o nthe mega cheap and have to say its brilliant....currently playing yu gi oh pokemon and mario kart..... the online functions are way ahead of the psp imo,

DS is the better gaming system....and with hte r4 card...i think DS just edges the psp.

The DS has better games, so the PSP cannot do what the DS can do.

Although my PSP can do something my DS doesn't get to... gather dust :p

I agree with Koneko, the psp can't match the ds for fun. It's a bad MP3 player, a half decent MPEG player and a inferior portable games machine. Portable gaming is primarily used in short periods and most of the games for the PSP are ports from home consoles (PS1 and PS2) so they don't suit the portable gaming genre - IMO.

Just in case you're wondering I own both so I'm not just a biased DS owner. I can honestly say my PSP hasn't been charged in over 6 months. (and I'm currently working my way through slitherlink on the DS (great game))

As for homebrew - get a R4 card and that's all you'll ever need.

whats gameplay on the ds like ?, is it like a gameboy advance with an extra screen, the games are a bit expensive aren't they, up to 50 euro ?

But you see thats the thing I love so much about the PSP, It can play all my favorite games from the PS1/2/3... except on the move. Not to mention the emulators/homebrew is class, especialy the ones for the SNES & SEGA. I even have Super Mario on it :D.

But I still don't know wy I want one, I'm going through it so much I could have it on PI and it won't be taken down! Like those Brain training adds look class, or is that just Nicole Kidman looking hot?!? :D I've an idea, I'll get me girl to get me one for Christmas, and if I don't like it I'd put it up for sale... like everybody on adverts. :p

Well, gameplay on the DS is very largely dependent on which game you're playing. Generally though, it's not comparable to the GBA. The touch screen allows for all sorts of novel carry on; if you like quirky, unmistakably-Japanese games than you'll find lots to like on the DS.

Typically games are between €30-€45 on the high street, but if you import (which is absolutely no hassle) you can get them for €20-€30.

OP, is this some kind of round-about troll to get people to defend the DS against the PSP? It really reads like one, you know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

I'm sorry if you feel that way Almighty Arse, but this is not one those. I feel, for some unknown reason that I want a DS. Dispite the fact that I don't find any need for it since I have a PSP. This thread is for people to tell me why I may feel like this, which is not known to me.

The DS combined with an r4 card (which costs about 33 euro..you can just drag and drop games onto it, play multimedia, emulation..) is one of my favorite consoles of all time. And this is coming from someone who has been playing games since the 80's.

I see you have a PSP and you want to get a DS for some reason? Originally I was set on buying a PSP. Picked up a DS a year ago and I haven't even considered buying a PSP since. It's just THAT good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Art_Wolf

I have both a PSP and a DS and I use both regularly. While I love the PSP I enjoy the games on the DS more - well, actually everying pales in comparision to GTA but thats only cause we love playing big games of that :)

And my previous yes was, yes the DS is worth it ;)

I own both and definitely much prefer my PSP most of the time, but that's not to say there's no good reasons to own a DS. Right now I'm playing the DS most because I'm working through Pokemon and I was playing Phoenix Wright before that.

The DS Lite feels more 'portable' than the PSP though. It's not much smaller but the fact that it's a clamshell and it's cheaper means I'm more comfortable throwing it around and of course the battery life on DS is better too which helps.

I guess it depends on circumstances - during college term the PSP was fantastic for throwing in the bag, along with a charger, and playing big multiplayer games in the labs. Over summer I've found the DS is handier for taking travelling and stuff where more bitesized games are required.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

Sorry if I took you up the wrong way, Nailz.

Anyway, even though those DS Lites are very temptingly shiny, given this:
    Nailz wrote:

you're not going to get much joy out of one. You could use it as a rubbish media player or a rubbish web browser, but your PSP can already do those things just as rubbishly. I'd say you're better off spending your money on, say, Lego, or women, or a Lego woman.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

Thanks for your help, but it still diddles me to why I felt like walking into Argos in Cavan and buying one. I litteraly spent 10 minutes in my car looking at myself in the mirror as to say "WTF are you doing!?" Apart from the fact I'm terribley good looking! :D BTW, how much does it cost... because I've plenty of money to spare?

Edit: To explain why the games aren't my type, I'm into the big gameplay and graphics guys eg. GTA Vice City Stories & Liberty City Stories, MGS: PO, PES 6 (I play the DS version and its shíte!), Medal of Honour Heroes (online), Tekken blah blah blah. Not to mention I've Super Mario on Homebrew, along with a shít loada' SNES & Sega titles, my favorite bands and family and friend photos. DS, has normaly 2D platforms and puzzles, which IMO are ment for the newspaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,563 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

comparing psp and ds specs is pointless, psp is much better in that aspect. but psp is worse because its too close to ps2 power. i much prefer playing GTA, PES6 etc at home on a PS2 with 2 analog sticks and i sold my PSP after a month at cost price(had to beat GTA vice 1st, which if i waited came to PS2).

DS offers new creativity in gaming and no lazy console ports. ive had a ds since launch. i think if Sony made the PSP less powerful and hence cheaper,it would have forced developers to make new games more suited to portable gaming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 615 ✭✭✭daedalus2097

Like a few people here are saying, it's not very expensive at all, so go out and buy one with a couple of games... If you don't like it in 6 months, sell it, but I'd wager you will like it! Games-wise, you can get a Mario Kart bundle which will get you started, get Advance Wars DS, maybe a brain tease game, New Super Mario Bros is just great, especially if you like the old ones on emulators. You've also got Final Fantasy III, Metroid Prime: Hunters and the likes for your longer types of game...

It seems like you won't find any use for the DS other than a paperweight. Don't buy it. You won't like the games (you've said so yourself)

I would think so. The thread makes no sense at all. I think I'll go into the Playstation forum and ask why I should buy a PS3 when it offers me nothing over my Xbox 360 and I don't like the games or control system on it.

Sorry if I'm taking you up wrong OP but this seems like you're just looking for attention/reaction form the Ninty boys

Ah fúck it! I'll get 1 (or it's my birthday soon, I'll get the GF to do it :D). It's annoying me too much, I'm losing presious thinking time at work! I'll head into Cavan tonight and get one, would Xtravision have a good price on 'em?? I'm feeling wierdly relieved...

dude... seriously, are you a troll?

if not then this is a dumbass topic

    1. You dont like DS games

    2. You say "platforms and puzzles" are meant for the newspapers

    3. You dont like the smaller screens or touch games

    4. You constantly mention how superior the psp is (homebrew, emulation, graphics, multimedia...)

(if you arent trolling) then dont buy one, it sounds like you only want one because its shiny

Pretty sure this is straight for a PSP advertisment lol.

If you are serious about it, then here is my advice. Do I think you should buy one? No. You won't like. It. Same as me with the PSP, it's in a cubboard for a year gathering dust. I had the same feeling as you, I didn't know why I wanted one, I just did and i succumbed to the temptation. It lies there untouched and unplayed to remind me never to be so stupid again.

Mmmm, Help!!! My DS is.... I don't know I try to turn it on, but poof! Gone dunno what happened. The battery is grand, I played it lastnight and I just tryed playing it now after I played Vice City Stories on my PSP. I only got it 2 or 3 weeks ago. I was hoping to play Mario Kart on it. I never heard of this happening to a DS. What could be wrong?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,264 ✭✭✭✭Hobbes

I got a PSP and DS (not lite) when they came out of. The two PSP was way better. Better feel to it, better graphics and none of the games showed off the DS at all at that time.

Since then gave away the DS and kept the PSP although didn't play it that much as it is painful to play with.

Now got a DS lite, which is way better then the two. The games are more pen based which makes it interesting to play, more compact and battery lasts longer compared to PSP.

My only complaint about the DS is that it is almost impossible to hook it up to your wireless without leaving gaping security holes or having problems with the network getting taken out (PSP just worked).

It would be nice if they had the wii as a gateway.

which is it a lite or phat? you could have dropped it im not sure how fragile lites are but ive dropped mine about ten times and its fine or maybe it ran out of power? or maybe it just died:confused: id bring it back if it doesent start up again

Nintendo will fix it if it's a hardware fault, which it sounds like it is, or you could lie and say it never turned on i which case the shop should take it back. I've dropped mine plenty of times and nothing to report. The lite seems to be very solid.

Flush it down the drain. Mario will pick it up along one of his adventures.

As for getting it back though, that's a little trickier. It involves whacking your head off a very large block. The block is situated in the clouds though, so you'll have to find a Racoon suit first.

No, seriously.... I'll ring the manager to try and get him to take it back. If this dunnie work, I suppose I'll ring CS.... what else could I do!
