This might sound silly but any help would be appreciated i have worked in the meat trade for 12 years now, in supermarkets and more recently in the butcher shop side,i am managing a shop at the moment but the time has come to move on,my wages have been the same(600 pw for 49 hrs)for a long time.I am now heading for an interview where i will have to discuss wages and i really dont have a clue what the average wage should be for a man of my qualifications,i dont want to under value myself but i dont want to put off what could be my future employer with excessive demands either.I really am in afix anyone any ideas????????

Best of luck with the interview regardless.

The average industrial wage is €32,000, apparantly.

Manufacturing Industries - Average weekly earnings of industrial workers in each year

    1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006

    Adult Males 428.82 453.04 477.73 512.38 538.38 564.90 588.92 609.91 624.45
    Adult Females 285.36 298.17 324.72 347.32 365.18 393.78 406.83 430.23 451.12

as taken from CSO website: http://www.cso.ie/statistics/indearnings.htm

I was a techie for four years with 3 different employers in the late 90's, early 00's, earning around £20k-£23k pa. I left and joined the guards for 3 years or so, came back to IT and started at £26k. Ouch. It's gone up within a year to £32k.

Last week I was offered a post with less 5 working hours less a week (35), 26 days A/L and at least €10k more than what I'm on.

It goes to show, the jobs are out there but you just have to keep your eyes open for them!!!

I'm not sure if anyone will be able to give you an accurate estimate here given the probable lack of experience with the meat trade on this board. Normally people would be pointed to a salary survey of some kind but I'm unaware of any survey that has ever covered the meat trade or a comparable sector. As was pointed out above the average industrial wage is approx €32k, but this excludes all clerical/managerial roles within industry which pay more on average. Given that butchering does involve a level of training/craft/skill, your experience, current managerial duties, and the longish working hours this does seem somewhat low.

Check out Irish Jobs. They have a salary survey section. You might be able to find something in there that matches what you're looking at.
