Ableton Live 6

hey folks, heres a question for ye:

i've been using cubase (sx3) for the past few months. i'm quite happy with it but do find it a pain in the behind sometimes. there's a few things about it i wish could be simpler.

now, earlier today i was messing around on ableton live 6 on my mates computer. i was very impressed with how user friendly it was and the range of features it has. i reckoned the sound quality was better too but this might be down to the guitar (we both use the same soundcard)

i'm considering picking it up but its not a cheap piece of kit. i was just wondering what disadvantages if any ableton has.

i record mostly guitar, bass, drums (electric) and also have a synth on the way. i've been told before that ableton is better for dancey stuff and that is an avenue i'm looking down. i know nothing of midi but when my synth arrives (its a midi controller too) i'll look into it.

does anyone have anything to say on the subject? confuzzled

    many thanks

Many people swear by Live including some very succesful artists, I have used it myself a bit but as I am so used to the regular sequencer paradigm (cubase, sonar etc..) I find I am not as productive with it as I'd like.

Perhaps you will have more success with it as you have been using cubase for only a few months, who knows??

Its all apples and oranges really, all the big audio programs are great in their own way its just up to you to find something that suits you.

ableton is probably my favourite musical device ever. However if you are just doing guitar/bass/drum stuff, you could probably save yourself a lot of money.

However if you see yourself going down any sort of an electronic road in the near future, ableton is really a great buy.

OT: always wanted to know who the people are who are buying hardware synths these days.
It's not a microkorg by any chance?

hahaa yeah, well i was looking at a microkorg but think i need something a bit more fully featured so i'm going for a Roland sh-201. Played it a few times and loved the sounds i was getting out of it.

Mmm tasty. I'm very tempted to get a hardware synth. I tried out a MicroKorg, sounded great but I was put off by the tiny keys. I got to play with a Doepfer modular analogue synth in college, now *that* was fun.

    wow. nice.

played a korg radias in musicmaker and that was the business but a bit too pricey for me. the sh 201 does everything i'm really after anyway.

set up your loop markers and your start markers on the verse sections, chorus sections etc.

i think this is what you're asking

There's a very funny video diary Pete Townshend made of himself using Albeton to construct a new Who song. Google for it.

sorry maybe i wasnt clear, i want to record the verse, chorus etc all in different takes. but to stop recording i have to stop playin and hit the stop record button leavin 2 seconds of nothin happenin at the end and start of the clip! so if i run the clips into each other there are gaps :o

still not sure what you are trying to do.
if you press stop and it gets an extra bar, adjust the loop/start/end markers so that you don't have the starts and ends.

The manual is also good. I PRESUME you have checked it!:)

antisocialiser, are you trying to record multiple takes, or split sections of recorded audio?

either way, if you have a gap you dont want, just delete it?

By the way judas101, if you want to buy Live, its much cheaper to upgrade from Live Lite to the full version. Probably every second bit of midi kit sold in the last two years came with Live Lite, so if you dont have a copy, I'm sure you could get your hands on one handy enough.

I will sell you live 6 for 200 notes. Fully reg and upgradable if you want?

Yep I got Live lite4 with my UMX-49, find it great but would love to get a more refined/complete version.

If it's any good to you there's AbletonLive 6 LE for €130 or thereabouts I think if you don't get Lite free with yer synth.

Does anybody know what taht's like in comparison to the full 6 version?

From experience with the Live Lite 4 I got with my Toneport the limitations are that you can only have 4 different tracks with (I think) 4 (or could be 6) parts to each. Not sure whether it limits use of VSTs or not. Never really got into that.

For the bedroom musician looking to throw down a few ideas or record a song it's fairly alright. One track each for guitar, bass, vocals and a MIDI drum track. You have enough parts to record the verse all the way through, chorus, bridge and end.

Not sure about if you were doing dance/electo type stuff whether it'd be suitable with the limitations but it's fine for trying it out, especially if you get it free with a bit of hardware
