Building a rackmounted server?

    Hi all

I'm considering building a couple of rackmounted servers for a job we're working on. We've got the rack space and I'm hoping we can build two servers for the price of one 'off the shelf'. The question is where is a good place to buy the cases and motherboards? Also is there a good forum anywhere for researching what works best? Thanks

www.microdirect.co.uk / www.scan.co.uk do alot of server equipment. Best bet to look there. I dont think there are any e-tailers in ireland that sell the stuff your looking for.

Look up GHO in dublin, wholesale computer suppliers. They are just around the corner from that Red Cow Hotel, dads company get all their rackmount cases/hardware from them.
As for hardware, it all depends on what you're doing with them.

Why would you go through the effort of ordering from the US? Everything you need is available in Ireland.

The two i linked are from the uk, have cheap shipping and cheaper prices then you will most likely find in ireland.

from your first link anti not the scan.co.uk link.
    500gig WD external MyBook £95 - €140 before shipping.

And that has what to do with rackmounted server equipment?

You obviously don't know the price of server cases in Ireland.

    http://www.jaguarcompsys.ie/product_info.php?products_id=545
    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(2601)Samcheer-4U-19-Black-Rackmount-case-300W.aspx

GHO Distribution would be cheaper than jaguar as well, and no shipping costs at all, they are in dublin. They would also stock loads of really budget chips and motherboards, ideal for a cheap rack server.

Sorry to be so blunt here dude, but are you not right in the head? The two cases you linked there. They are not even the same. Or remotly similar.

The one from jaguar is a very basic 4u case. no power supply no fans or anything.

The one from microdirect is a better 4u model, with a 300w psu included, and 120mm fan.

So....I think the one from microdirect is far better value....Dont you?

    *edit*

Heh, just notice jaguar have all of 1 rack mounted case.. Microdirect have 9. Not an as amazing choice as there used to be. But buying direct from ibm, dell etc etc is very cheap these days, so there is a much smaller market for this type of stuff.

Great selection here but none of them deliver to Ireland.

I think we'll go for a 1u server case with three drive bays. The question remains which 1u case and then which motherboard. There really is a lot of motherboards to choose from.

    Cant go wrong with this:

    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(15700)Samcheer-SC186G-1U-19-Rackmount-case-black.aspx

Especially as in the price includes a 350w power supply. The motherboard is a bit tricky, Do you plan on going with intel? if so what socket? 775? 771? One cpu, 2 cpu's, dual core, quad core etc etc. Or are you going to go with AMD?

Ill spec you up a nice little build, and see what you think.

    Motherboard
    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(14483)Supermicro-X7DVLE-Dual-Intel-64bit-Xeon-Intel.aspx

    Cpu's X 2
    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(16994)Intel-CPU-Xeon-3040-2x-186GHz-1066MHz-2MB.aspx

    Ram X 4
    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(9851)Corsair-Value-Select-1Gb-DDR2-PC5300-memory.aspx

Now that would give you a pretty high spec setup, with scope for upgrades in the future, but its not going to be cheap. I have tried to keep costs down by using the cheapest mobo, cpu and ram.

I'm thinking that we might use the new RAID SATA drives. Western Digital do some, sorry don't have the link. They're not as fast as the SAS drives but they are much cheaper and we don't need top performance.

Hard drive performance in servers is essential if you will be moving alot of data, but if you are not then any sata/2 drive will do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_5#RAID_5 Read up on this, it might be a option you will want to consider. though, 4 drives in a 1U is evry much unheard of, 2u will be fine though, but then if you are going with co-location hosting they charge for rack space too.
