    From my friend's pc.
Sent by e-mail, so all the spaces were taken out. I think I got them all.
Anyway, can someone have a look at it, please?
He was running a scan on AVG free at the time and kernel32.dll came up as a problem. I know that's not right.

Your friends log is clean. I've seen AVG report that before, think it's a mistake on their part. Do this though to be sure. Have him turn off word wrap before he does anything as it makes the logs a pain to read, open notepad, click format, uncheck "word wrap", and no need to put quotes around the logs. Is he having any trouble besides that?

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

    Right. Hang on.
    *looks out window*
No. He's not at home right now. I won't see him until tomorrow evening or very late tonight.

He is having trouble with the extra RAM he bought for his pc. (SDRAM)
His PC is one of those PC world packard bell basic package ones and keeps crashing when he puts in the new 1gb ram.

He called me over earlier because he noticed there was a trojan on his pc, which AVG had picked up on. However, it was in the vault when he showed it to me, but I thought i would post the log just in case. With that and the kernel32.dll thing, I thought there might be a problem.
My old pc kept crashing because of a kernel32 problem, so I was thinking he might have something to worry about. However, if it's just AVG, then all seems well. Excapt for the RAM thing. If anyone know anything about that. Sorry, I don't have the make/ model numbers here with me. I'll either get them later tonight or tomorrow.
please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
Dude, I might not know everything, but I'm not a complete n00b.

I even italicised the "is" above by using CTRL+I. :)

I have a feeling that ASJ just has that saved, and copies it into a post when needed, so don't take offence :p

my Shell32.Dll used to show up as "changed" on AVG free, but i found an option that allows you to ignore the changes when your sure that there is nothing wrong with them.

    No Wai, ya reckon......

Yeah my kernal32.dll has the same problem. Another reason why AVG can be a little daft at times.

I didn't take offence, or mean to be offensive. I just found it a bit funny. That's all.

What model is his packard bell pc, it might only be able to take 1GB of RAM and the 1GB plus whatever he has in it is crashing the machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

    Where do I find that.
    I'm sitting at it now.

This should check the system memory information and show what is compatible with it (and how much can be installed). The model number might be shown under Control Panel->System->General or might be just written on the front of the computer. If you have that, then you can enter the information manually on Crucial.com but the scanner should give you enough information.

ok. that site tells me this:
    Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
    Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
    Available Memory Slots: 1
    Number of Banks: 2
    Dual Channel Support: No
    CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
    CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz Model 4, Stepping 9
    CPU Speed: 3059 MHz

There is currently 512 on it, but it still won't take the extra 1gb.

Edit: the dual channel support thing. Does that mean it won't recognise two sticks of RAM?
