Just noticed that the 40D is available for less than €1000 in a few places on ebay. All reputable sellers. A couple of examples here and here.

Albert has it too :D. Tempting! Some people in the UK have had it delivered already from Digital-Rev.

hmmm danny you're like the little devil... the devil says buy now, the angel says wait a month or two to make sure there are no hiccups at the start..

I wasn't expecting it to be under 1000 even from HK.

    Gah. damn. Feck.

I did have a sneaky look on ebay for it yesterday, I must admit. Didn't see Albert's listing though.

Need to quiet down that little devil on my left shoulder... not until after christmas, the angel on the right shoulder says. Gah.

Wonder who will be the first to crack...?

to anyone that's currently fighting the battle between getting it and not; I say life's too bloody short. Get it and enjoy it! Pre-order it now and if Albert's stock comes in over the weekend, you'll have it by Wednesday next week.

Loads of people have already received them here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=9 from the shots taken looks like its the same as the 30D for high ISO.

Guys... in your honest expert opinions.... :) would this camera be a step too far for someone starting off with DSLR's? I use an (old) manual SLR and a Canon G7 at the mo, but I am afraid now to spend the money on a 400d when this is dangled like a carrot in front of me! What d'ya's think????

Well if you are used to an SLR I'd say get it. You'll probably hanker for it in a year or less if you buy something else anyway. Is your present SLR a Canon? If so you could use the lenses.

Depends on what you do with that manual SLR. For what I used to do with the manual, namely landscape and people, the 350D, or now, 400D, would be more than adequate.

On the other hand, as soon as I discovered continuous shooting mode and autofocus things got a little out of hand. I bought the 350D May 2006. I'll be acquiring a 40D at Christmas.

You may want to take that into consideration.

Yes but with no AF. If its an EOS. Methinks anyway.

Ah to hell with it. OP, just buy some new lenses. You'll feel good for it.

Even I'm tempted to get a 40D. Some very nice features.

For now, I'll hold on to my money.

Yeah saw that on Alberts site on the weekend, ignored it and bought a new lens instead. I'm sure I will buckle eventually probably after christmas.

I look forward to using all yours in the meantime. Go on Julie join the darkside :D

The FPS on my 400D isn't enough for football, so I need this camera!
    Then I'll be a two-body photographer again. :D
I know I said that I wouldn't spend any more on gear, this year, but I really need this!
    I'll keep you all posted.

    Ah, good old fps.

the greatest excuse going. In fact, I'm using it too, except the fps on my 350D isn't good enough for kitesurfing.

Of course not! Your case is definitely valid.
I'll back you up, if there's any dispute. ;)
I've decided that I need a battery grip too, so I need to find one seller, willing to take my money for both items.

I hadn't realised it was even released yet! I'm tempted, but I think I'll wait til Adobe pull out the finger and support it in Lightroom, as I really couldn't be bothered using DPP, which I've usually found at best a painful and slow experience

nice one Peader, let us know how it is when you get it. Can't wait until I get mine but I'm not caving just yet

Which they should have done by the time the camera arrives I'd say.

With regards to DPP, why don't you like it? It seems to me that many discerning Canon users on the wab and that I have met much prefer what DPP does to their RAW files than what LR does. I use LR mostly out of habit but when I do use DPP I keep telling myself that I should use it more often. There is something about the quality and integrity of the conversion compared to LR.
Painful and slow it certainly isn't and I don't have a Core2Duo! Plenty quicker than LR and it's batch processing is more instinctive.

Many people shun DPP initially but many change their mind after they use it for awhile. Fantastic programme and even better now with V3.2 which has just been released with the 1DMIII. When you think about it LR has to deal with dozens of RAW types, Canon has to deal with it's own. If you are into manipulating your images a lot well then, yes, LR has the knobs.

Well, my dislike might be a bit irrational as I only ever tried it with my old PC, which is around the 6 years old mark at this stage and was no spring chicken when I tried DPP. I found it quite flaky, prone to running out of memory and crashing. My install process was also painful. It didn't ship with the 300D, but required that all the crud that DID ship be installed before DPP would allow itself to be installed. Installation of Zoombrowser et al was a long frustrating process in my experience, and prone to just stopping leaving itself in a half installed state. It would most like be quite happy though on my current PC.

I also always had the impression that DPP destructively edits the RAWs (could be wrong on this). I like Lightrooms (and previously Rawshooters) storage of edits in metadata leaving the original untouched.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

It isn't really irrational John. I think most people feel that way about DPP initially because of it's clunky nature. It's just that the programme hides itself under a bushel a bit. The Canon software has matured though.

DPP is non-destructive. As far as I know it's not possible to alter a RAW file physically. DPP stores the edit info in the Raw file, a bit like Adobe DNG files..

Just for the body. They didn't have the BG-E2N in stock. Will have to suffer on for a while longer. Might get away with a BG-E2 though.

So here I go.... I am going to order the 40d, (woo hoo!) and I have about €600 left over for a lens or hopefully 2. Should I go sigma or stick with canon? :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

The lens you buy depends on what you want to do with it.

Before you buy the camera, make sure that they have it in stock. I checked a few places, who were willing to take my money, but didn't have a delivery date for their stock.
Went back to a tried & trusted seller in the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭Dink

Was going to go with Kea photo. All good reviews from here. Bit overwhelmed TBH, as to what to choose. Was thinking of the Canon EF 50 f1.8 mkII and a sigma 10-20 and 70-300.. as Rymus advised in another thread. That should keep me going for a while!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Ok, I'm oh so tempted to get the 40D now. It does look good, especially for the price. I think the 1D MkIII is well outside my budget and I don't even think I could stretch to the price of a 5D. I also think the fps and other functions would be more what I would use than anything else.

    So folks ... should I or shouldn't I???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭bovril

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭CraggyIslander

*hugs his 30D* they wont tempt me, they wont tempt me, they wont tempt me

Am asking santa for a 5D..... me wants full frame :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

I've a 20D, so for me the logical step would be the 1D MkIII or the 5D. But, money is the big thing. I'd like a larger frame size, but I am so used to the 1.6 crop that it wouldn't bother me at all now. Yes, most of my lenses (almost all) are L, and all are Canon.

Ah, the temptation of it all. I guess for what I do and need, the 40D would be more than enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

I blame this place... I was almost justifying it to myself last night that if I sold my 20D and used the 30D as a backup, I could get a 40D. Then I slapped myself. All back to normal now...

Yeah, this place is too much of a temptation alright.

I like your logic there. I think the 40D would be a very good replacement for your 20D.

For me, the 40D would be my main, and the 20D as my backup.

See, we both have very good justification for buying. So, you order one, let me know how it is, and then I'll buy one. :D
