You have a couple of options. Repeat the year, costs alot though, 3 grand or so. Alternatively just repeat the subject(s) you failed as an external student for the year. i.e you only pay a small fee to repeat the exam(s) again, don't attend lectures just turn up for the exam. You would have two more chances to pass in May/August 2008 and after that it's curtains.

If you are only failing one subject after the repeats, there's a possibility they might let you carry it into second year or compensate (by your overall average) if you fail it by 5% or less. But these things are at the discretion of the department head and it's a hit and miss thing. They might let you and they mightn't. If you fail both again you're looking at repeating the year realistically.

Repeating as an external student would mean that you are an external student for the year, so you wouldn't be attending lectures for anything. You'd just be coming back next May to sit the exam(s) again.

Going into second year with a fail grade still on your record is called carrying a subject. I don't know the exact rules on it, there's nothing in the exam regulations online. I think it is at the discretion of the exam board for your course whether they allow it or not. They would probably consider how much you failed by, which subject it was, would it affect you in 2nd year etc. There doesn't appear to be a hard and fast rule and I don't know how common it is for them to allow it, but judging from posts I've seen here in the past it's not something that's easy to get and you wouldn't want to be relying on it. BTW CA marks still count for the repeats as far as I know.

Probably as well to contact the course head or department head.

Some colleges allow you to progress to second year but you can not take any course that has the failed subject as a pre-requisite.

alig4lyfe, just as a heads up, was curious myself so I asked a head of department (in engineering) about carrying a subject and how it works. He said it's not something they allow very often, and ordinarily you'd be expected to repeat. And with subjects that are central to your course (which electrical systems and electronics presumably are) it's even less likely. So you better be looking to pass those repeats!

    hi

i did physical and life sciences in kevin street, in 2nd year three people in my class failed 1 exam and were aloud into 3rd year and to carry the exam, this meant that they sat 3rd year exams and the 1 2nd yr exam. they were not given their 3rd year results til they passed the 2nd year exam, unfortunally one girl failed the 2nd yr exam so she did not get 3rd year results as to get into 3rd year you have to pass 2nd yr.

however these 3 people did 2nd yr, repeated it failed, repeated again failed and repeated again and failed, the course was changed from applied science to physical and life science so that may have been the reason they were let skip into 3rd yr without passing all exams, also the subjects they failed were language or business, they passed all the science subjects. i also no some one 2 yrs ahead of me was aloud carry a business subject but again thats cos it was not a main subject in our course.

As your subject is one of the main ones in your course i dont think they will let you. but its worth a try. just put your head down and study hard, you are failing 1st year exams which are a lot easier than all the following years, you need to think is it cos you were out partying and missed classes or are you just finding it hard, if its the later is there another course similar but with things you are good at that you could transfer into, if there are any vacancys they may let you take the course without applying. just something to think about. hope i could be of some help. good luck with the exams etc
