Can Someone Explain This?

My DVD drive is a Phillips dvd8601 and that can't write to DVD-RW as I've been trying to do. But while googling I found this site here where they explain how to mod that drive to a Benq DW1620 which apperantly can write to DVD-RW. So is that right? I don't entirely get what they mean with this firmware stuff but does anyone think that will work for me? Thanks:)

Firmware, for this explanation-sake is software that is in the drive. The software can be changed to a different software version, in a lot of cases. The advantages are that it may let you write to different disc brands, types or discs, or at different speeds. The drawback is: it can potentially **** up your drive, and it will void your warranty(If there is one). I haven't read your link - I'll assume you got it right.
