Well today in Korea a few pictures were released and as most of you know I've been waiting for this body to replace my ageing E1. All anyone knows officially is it has LiveView and IS in body.

Well magnesium alloy case and dust/weather sealed and if it's in any way as tough as the E1 it's way ahead of the rest.

Have a look at what the E1 had been subjected to

looks pretty sweet. Any sign of specs or prices yet?

I like the look of the Oly E-x system - the sensor dust cleaning, live view, in-body IS, smaller lenses and the possiblilty of a 28mm-400mm range in just two lenses.

Does it have the 2x crop factor like some of the other Oly's?

As for price, I've seen speculation of a €2500 launch price.

Those specs and price were leaked before the camera was out of development. At the moment there seems to be no clearly defined spec.

Will just have to wait until October for the final specs

I would seriously consider changing from Canon if the production model has one of these:

"Live View with multi angel LCD"

    Sounds divine!

Strange most people said this was the one feature they wanted the least when the E330 came out nearly 2 years ago.

I know now Canon and Nikon have adopted the live view system into their High end pro bodies. What would you see yourself using it for?

I reckon i would use mine for general guardianship, not sure what else they could be useful for but having more than one of them should mean I am well protected...you never know whats around the corner..

LiveView has quite a few advantages over the old OVF design
    - Macro shots where space or angle is difficult.
    - Composition with overlay of grids or other visual aids.
    - Getting the shots others can't for example over groups or objects.
    - SuperFine Manual Focus as it can magnify 10x.
    - Studio composition, you can work away in front of the camera while watching the view finder.
    - Live Histogram.
    - Low light preview of composition when the OVF just wont work.
    - Bigger brighter VF for peoples with sight problems.
    - LiveView sensors allow real time video out to pc or TV's.
    - Underwater photography

    And the disadvantages
    - More power consumption.
    - Higher cost to body.

Seems every one is jumping on the Liveview bandwagon , but its one of those things that doesnt really deliver all that it promises , it has about the same usefulness as on a point and shoot , but isnt going to do anything wonderful for most SLR users ,
    - Macro shots where space or angle is difficult.
Most macro lenses work best with manual focus , and that doesnt work too well over a small LCD screen.
    - Composition with overlay of grids or other visual aids.
Should be in the OPV , its better there
    - Getting the shots others can't for example over groups or objects.
    Agreed
    - SuperFine Manual Focus as it can magnify 10x.
No , doesnt work , in fact an LCD can be a curse here as it would need to be huge to give an accurate focus representation, manual focus should always be done looking through the lens , would be great if it did work though. To compare , how many times have you thought you had a sharp shot after reviewing on the LCD , and you put it up on the screen and its not ?
    - Studio composition, you can work away in front of the camera while watching the view finder.
Best to hook up to a laptop for that. Again bigger screen is better.
    - Live Histogram.
Im with bryan peterson on this one , quote " Histograms are useless " , for many many reasons , best to focus on Light meter /shutter-speed / aperture values.
    - Low light preview of composition when the OVF just wont work.
Again , for the same reason that manual focus doesnt work , this doesnt either , the LCD is not accurate enough. You end up thinking you have a great shot , put it on the computer and its crap ...small LCDs are awful liars!
    - Bigger brighter VF for peoples with sight problems.
diopter adjustment on OVF is better
    - LiveView sensors allow real time video out to pc or TV's.
    Agreed
    - Underwater photography
Its weather proof , not waterproof , but still , flat against the body in a watertight case I suppose it would work.

It looks like live view is the next big selling point , but one of those I strongly suspect most SLR users will be dissappointed with and not use after the initial try outs.

mathias which camera with LiveView do you own or even use ?

I'm here using LiveView on an E510 and am well able to address your some what strange views on the matter.

Manual focus works very well over LiveView even better than the OVF. I know from focusing on a distant window latch of the building across from me with the aid of the 10x magnification mode. Tested too with macro and when you can get sharp focus on particles of dust on a black surface for 30cm you know it works.

I don't use the histogram as I'm happy with my technique to date but it dose exactly what it says on the tin.

On the point of Studio composition and small screens fine you bring a laptop but i will use what I have which i would be happy with.

You make little or no sense on the "Low light preview" subject it only gives you more light than the OVF that's all. Focus and exposure is still up you you.

have a read about use of LiveView underwater here before saying such things.

Mathias which camera with LiveView do you own or even use ?

Sisters 510 same as you and for macros I find the LCD awkward and at some times totally inaccurate to use , the OVF is way better to focus manually.
We take a lot of stock shots for her online shop. Its her camera by the way , not mine. And with a macro lens manual is best , autofocus is inaccurate and the LCD is certainly no help.

For low light shots , the LCD liveview gives a brighter image than you actually get. You say as much yourself , and thats no good ! You end up under or overexposing , Thats my point , nothing strange there.

And as for underwater , your link just confirms exactly what I said , a watertight container with the liveview flat against the back of the camera , so whats strange about that ? Any point and shoot can do that in a watertight container.

Liveview will give an SLR exactly what it gives a point and shoot , a lazy none to accurate way of taking pictures , OK for snaps , but thats it. Lets be realistic here , There are many benefits better than liveview on the next generation of SLR's , its nothing special. And certainly is nowhere near ready to replace an OVF

It looks like an October 17th release date.

Sorry kids, no Christmas presents this year, Santa needs a new camera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Sebzy

LiveView kicks ass it's official :)

Just tested out LiveView with the low light mode on and saw the whole scene there before me.

Nw you may think this is nothing special apart from the fact I had a Hoya R72 infrared filter. No more blind shooting.

Sebzy, how will it compare with the 14bit cannon cameras? 2dx and so on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Sebzy

LOL remember fanatically following a brand has nothing to do with how well it preforms it's all about the BRAND.

    here's my thinking

Olympus = cocaine = happy *******ns

If you think hard about what Olympus has done and it's great vision for the future it's flawed at it's core. Buy I love the vision as many people do.

    Ok back to reality.
The E3 will take pictures and dam good ones at that it's not going to be better or worse than anything else out there on the market it's just going to do the job.

    Well here's something new

It appears Oly is moving away from the conventional sensor design and has developed a 10MP Trine Full-Frame Transfer CCD.
    http://www.parkoz.com/zboard/view.php?id=dm_techinfo&no=2588

This coupled with a touch LCD could make this a quite unique piece of kit.

I have Live View on my 40D.
Have never actually used it & can't see myself using it anytime soon.

As for the moveable LCD, it's just another thing to break off.
    The cost seems extreme!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭Dara Robinson

Personally I have to say that I can see a multitude of uses for the Live LCD and lots of times wishing that my own E1 had that feature so I am glad about that.
The fact that it’s so movable? Well, just adds so the versatility of the feature. As for breaking it... well if your breaking stuff on your camera its not going to last very long anyways. Personally I treat my camera as if it were as fragile as baby chicken with some kind of heart disease or something like that. I don’t even have a scratch or a nick on the body.

Will be interesting to see how it performs against the other cameras in its category.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

    Dara Robinson in stereo!

I'm not in the habit of breaking stuff off my camera, but thankfully, Canon don't put silly little screens on their SLRs.

As for the live view, I have it & don't use it.
You don't have it, but think you'll use it.
Lack of battery performance may soon bring you back down to earth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭Dara Robinson

city, I have it on a Minolta I dont use that much and I do use it. Its great for getting more height that you can see and the same goes for low and or macro shots. See, I'm lazy and getting down and lying on the ground is a big ordeal for me :p

P.S: Soz aboot the duplicates, just the other voises in my head reiterating what I was saying ;)

:) Oh that's the best to date this is what the E1 has gone through with me
    - Covered in mud and slime @ Off road range rover trials
    - Dropped from 3ft table onto concrete floor while doing product shots.
    - Submersed in salt water at beach
    - Chipped/Scratched the magnesium body when rock climbing in howth.

Oh yea and a tons of scratches from punk/metal gigs.

    Still working and still happy.

I love that I can do all that and much more to my E-1 and it will still work fine. I'd still be pretty happy surgically attaching it to my arm (via the strap) so ensure I never drop it though

Sebzy, can you hear all the pfft's from the cannon users out there as if they didnt care that the olympus is just a better build? :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

Better built would mean something to me, if I considered keeping a single camera for more than 5 years. That has never been the case though, as I'm a gear junky & always look for more.
Having said that, I spend a lot of time in the rain, on the mucky football pitches of the eircom League of Ireland & no Canon camera has ever failed me. That's 3 consumer models & 1 prosumer model.
