Im looking to get a good wine, bottled (layed down?) in 2006, because a very good friend had a daughter in 2006 and I want to get a wine that is as old as her, and will age ok until she is 16 / 18 / 21. And I think the Italian red Biondi Santi is it. but I think I read that they dont bottle their wine every year, only on the years they think it will be good.

So, does anyone know if there will be 2006 bottles of Biondi Santi?

It's a tough one. I had a quick look on the net but I found their website kind of awkward to use. Is the wine you're talking about a Brunello di Montalcino? If they only make it in good years, it must be a "Riserva" you're talking about. Theoretically, these should be capable of ageing for a number of years.

But any vintage charts I'm familiar with only go as far as 2004-5. I'm not sure how the Tuscan vintage fared last year.

Don't despair though if it turns out that they're not releasing a top-end wine from 2006. The world of wine is large. A little research will show you which countries / regions had excellent vintages, and from those you can choose a good wine with ageing potential.

I know that Bordeaux had a good, but not great, year in 2006. Maybe consider a wine from here? You'd have to pay massive money these days for any Bordeaux from a stellar vintage, so the stuff from good, but less hyped-up, vintages can represent more canny purchasing. Stick to the top wines from Left Bank (Margaux / Paulliac / St. Estephe / St. Julien) chateaux.
