Apply online or by snail mail?

Where a job advert has a postal address listed as well as a contact email and an "apply online" button, how should one apply? Is one method generally preferred by most employers? Which one, or does it matter?

I've been applying for jobs using a mixture of email and applying online to ads but so far haven't gotten a job I'd really like. Should I be following the internet application up with a CV sent in the post as well?

It depends on the company. usually in the ad it will say what way you should apply. In work, we have an oniline application system and don't accept applications by post, as they are too hard too track. Plus most companies need the CV on file so they can send it on to other managers etc by email. We do have the company address in some ads so people will know where we are based. In my experience online really is the best way to apply, unless stated otherwise.
