was thinking of getting one of these to curb my ever sprawling collectin of gigabytes.

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=332166

thought it looked good until i saw that it's 2 x 500gig drives, would they appear as 2 partitions or 1?

also just reading the customer review there it seems there's a lot of hassle to use some features.

can anyone spec me a similar size drive that can do the same things, also is it possible to FTP into the drive?

I have the non Nas version. It has a raid controller on board so it can appear as a single 1TB volume if you set up Raid 0.

yeh my brother has the 500gig non nas version aswell, hasn't put a foot wrong really, in fact it was one of the main factors in me actually picking western digital.

but i'd really like to know would it be possible to ftp into the drive easily enough.?

    I bought this
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=331865

and am very happy with it.

The reason the other product is at 299 is because it has been slated by critics and there is a new 1.5Tb version out now. I think it is pretty much acknowledged that it is a poor product but at that price you might be able to overlook its faults.

Would www.freenas.org + a low power mini itx suit you ?

I have a buffalo terasation with 1TB. Has 4 drives in Raid 5 so gives you round 750gb of free space and if one of the drives fail you are still ok. You can FTP into it and it has a print server as well so you can connect a USB printer to it. This is very handy as every PC can now use that printer! Costs about €550.

To the OP...upon reading the specs on komplett, it states:

Storage Controller RAID - RAID 1

Drive 1 is mirrored onto drive 2, which means you really only have 500GB of storage and the second 500GB is a backup of the first 500GB.

After reading the quick install pdf from WD website, the drive is preformatted as a Linux file system. It is preconfigured for maximum capacity as a large single spanned volume.

I bought the Maplin "DIY" NAS enclosure and a 250GB drive in Peats, all for €165 last year. While it's probably bargain basement, it does the job well for both LAN access/FTP. For eg, a 4GB iso for running OSX on a PC was uploaded to it. Took a while, but a whole lot better than torrents! You don't need to install access software on every PC either. Instead it uses UNC and you map a drive in the usual way.

The FreeNAS option suggested by bushy looks interesting...http://ie.youtube.com/results?search_query=freeNAS

that looks quite good actually. ftping wouldn't be a problem with this would it?

looking at the customer review there it's says i'll need a static IP from my ISP, any way of coaxing BT into giving me a static IP on a home based broadband package?

freenas and a old computer isn't really an option as i rather not have to fish around for parts.

You can request a ststic ip. But BT are under no obligation to do so. Why do you not let your router assign a static ip to each pc/device. Im not 100% sure how this works, but i believe its possible.

wouldn't that be an internal staticIP ie. 192.168.1.xxx

just thinking ftp would be useful if i forgot something and needed it for college etc.

giving a NAS, IP printer or an IP camera a static internal IP address is always a good idea.

To access the likes of a NAS via FTP or an IP camera over the Internet, a static public IP address from your ISP is a big advantage. Otherwise you can sign up with the likes of www.dyndns.com.

Another way is to get your public IP address emailed to you periodically. Here's how http://www.filetransit.com/view.php?id=34230

If you have a nas installed with a static (internal) ip and connected to a router which has a dynamic ip assigned (by isp), how to you ftp to it from the interweb remembering that dyndns runs as an app on a pc?

In other words can a nas device use such services as they are pretty dumb and you cannot load third party apps on them afaik.

my router is a linksys WAG354G that supports DDNS. so that can be used to update my IP to a DNS like blahblah.shacknet.nu etc.

before i put the order for this will what i have in mind work, ie, use dyndns to reroute the address they give me to my public IP to allow me to ftp into the drive?

Should work. I've a netgear router with DDNS and I can FTP into my NAS (terastation) no problem. Not sure what it's like with the linksys but on the netgear you just have to select FTP:20:21 from the drop down list and point it to your nas server. Then you just ftp into blahblah.shacknet.nu:21. I had some problems with putty but filezilla works great.

    Edit:
Oh and just remember you won't be able to test this from behind your router as it won't let you send out the request and send it back in again!
