I have a small network set up with 10 PC's. There is no server but I am looking to purchase one. It's only use will be for file sharing. PC's will have drives mapped to this server.

What I would like to know is will I have to purchase User Licenses for this Small Business Server ????

SBS as far as I was aware came with 5 CALS.. You can buy more from the reseller than sold you SBS 2003

    See: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/evaluation/faq/licensing.mspx

I thought that as I would not be using any software applications I would not have to purchase licenses.

Either you can either specify a set amount of machines or users that can simultaneously use the server through your CAL's. You need 10 probably. 5 come with SBS then you can buy 5 or more seperately.

TBH, if its a fileserver you want, save yourself the 600e in licencing and get this:

    http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=82
    http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=16

They will do a lot more than serve files if you need it to, including LDAP support.

SBS is a one stop product for a small office. Provides DC, Mail, ISA for the office so if this is not what you want then get a standard MS Windows 2003 server with 10 CALs
