    Hi Guys,

I know there is a similar thread about someone looking for a change from their Civil Service job but I think this is a bit different. A brief background where I'm coming from:

I am 31 years old and working in the IT sector. Its a fairly good job with pension, health and alright money. I commute for 1hr 15 min to 1hr and a half, each way, every day. I dont love my job nor do I hate it either, it has its good and bad days. My work collegues are fairly sound but my boss is a bit of a tosspot. Always micro managing and never happy with your work.

My cousin works for an transport company and has said that there is a job for me locally (no more commuting) if I ever want it. The money is about the same as what I am on without benifets, although this can rise as it is sort of commission based.

I am really in a dilemma on what I should do? One minute I am all for it and the next I am saying I would be stupid to throw away my career in IT, where I have worked for about 7 years. I am married and we are trying for kids at the moment.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

How secure would the new job be? Are there no IT companies any nearer to where you live than your present job?

Hi, no there are no IT companies near me at all. At least not for what I do. I would nearly have to start from the bottom of the ladder if I were to start in other companies closer to home.

The new job would be secure alright and there would be a contract signed before I started. Thanks...

Sorry, but I found the fact that even though its less commute, you'll be possibly be driving all day, slightly comical. Perhaps that's just me, though.
    commission based.
This rang a few alarm bells for me. "Commission based" usually means that you get X IF you do Y amount of jobs a day...

personally - if i was trying for kids with the missus id be more worried about the prospect of future income and benifits .......... but then again you prob wanna be spending their younger yrs with them rather than be a father that appears home at 8 and is there for weekends.....
still commission based is a worry for me....

    best o luck

Would starting at the bottom of the ladder in another IT company really be so bad? QWith your experience you'd hopefully pick everything up quickly and be promoted before too long. Money isn't everything and personally I'd far rather do a job I like, as close to home as possible, than to take another job that just happens to be available.

Do you think you'd like working in the transport company? Do you know what the day-to-day work would involve and does that seem like something you'd be happy doing? Happier than working in IT?
