A dispute in work...

Hey guys, recently just started working in a camera shop and was talking through the D40 and D40x with a customer and explaining that you must buy lenses with inbuilt autofocus motors for it to work etc... (otherwise it's manual focus all the way)

But then a collegue came over and said that's not entirely true and the the lens drawback is that you must buy Nikon brand lenses and any Nikon lens will auto focus...

Is this true? Are there any other lens brands, other than Nikon (Sigma etc...) that will autofocus in these cameras? Or are you just limited to Nikon brand lenses??

As far as I know, you are both right. You must have an af motor in the lens, but it has to be a Nikon lens to have this.

As far as I know, though!

Sigma's HSM will work (and one non-HSM as far as I recall)

Tokina have nothing that will autofocus on a D40(x).

    I'm a happy D40 owner by the way :D

    False on two accounts....
There are other makes of lenses with AF systems that will work (e.g. Sigma as Thirdfox has said).
Not all nikkor lenses have AF (obviously there are manual lenses) see here for loads of info.

Well done on flogging Nikon gear ;) (I work for a divison of them)

Hmm, for someone who works for a division of Nikon you're remarkable ill-informed ;-) Only AF-I and AF-S nikkor lenses will work with either the D-40 and the D-40x. So there are a whole gigantic back catalogue of nikon AF lenses that certainly won't work with the D-40/x. Not so much a big problem going forward because nikon seem pretty commited to the AFS thing but definately something to consider.

-edit- god-darnit ... there IS a whole gigantic back catalogue ... before you know it I'll start spelling lens "lense" and bemoaning how the entire country is "loosing" its "morales" ... -edit-

yes not all nikon lenses work with it. I have the f70s kit lens 28-80 and it wont autofocus with the d40.

I don't think I said that all nikkor AF lenses would work, did I
I did say there are other makes of lenses that have af that would work.

Thats why I linked to the pdf's of compataible lenses/models etc.
Anyway my choice for the D40/x is the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX Zoom (lens names are always a mouthful :) )....pity I can't afford it yet.

PS Division of Nikon could be anything ;)
