What exactly do you expect to get from having a circumcision? If your forskin is too tight then its a simple matter to get a referal from a doctor to have the procedure carried out. Plenty of men undergo circumcision every year in Ireland.

I would have thought that in the general case, circumcision would make sex less enjoyable. Do you have a problem retracting your foreskin perhaps?

Here are some archived threads for reference:

I had it done for medical reasons - my foreskin was splitting and was particularly painful. The results for me have been very positive, but I would not see how it could in any way improve your sex life. It really has made no difference at all in that regard. No disimprovement but, no improvement other than I no longer have a sore foreskin !

If you need it for some medical reason, e.g. a very tight foreskin, repeated infections, etc it may be an option for you at some stage but I would definitely try other things first.

    1) Stretching exercises - simple!
    2) Get your GP to prescribe a topical steroid cream for it. This will help to loosen the skin up.
    3) Get a referral to a urologist, who may be able to give you more options.
    4) If all that fails, then consider getting the circumcision.

My own experience with it has been quite positive i.e. it did exactly what it said on the tin - solved a problem and has caused no complications for me.

However, I would think very carefully before getting any surgery that isn't necessary. You're getting into the realms of cosmetic surgery there and you really need to be 100% sure of what you're doing!

Seek advice from your GP and get a referral to a urologist!

You'll lose a lot of sensitivity if you have a circumcision.
    Aesthetically speaking it looks vile.

Unless you're experiencing an actual problem / discomfort at the moment (e.g. foreskin too tight / won't retract, as Boston & Stark mentioned) then circumcision won't do either of these things.

And there's nothing to be embarrassed about ... us guys have all got one, and most of the women around here seem to have figured out what they are by now! :D

How do you know Miss Fluff? Ever have it done?

It has been documented it can slightly heighten or slight lower sensitivity, in a 3rd world country you'll probably come out badly.

Why would anyone be ashamed to talk about it openly?

I had it done, it's grand, i was going mad beforehand though.

Lookit, you think the entire Jewish race is going around with lowered sensitivity(i know it's done at birth blah blah blah)

there are other proceedures recommended like frenuloplasty but i bet some stuck in his ways urologist would boo that idea down - your frenulum is your bango string incase some people don't know.

as for the looks - after a solid year, it looks just like a pr0n stars 'lad' :) no complaints from my gf

If there is a medical reason for doing it, it's simple enough to get your doctor to refer you.
If there isn't, I would imagine doctors would be less likely to prioritise it.
I'm not sure why someone would get it done though if there wasn't a necessity.

I assume Miss Fluff is merely repeating a fairly widespread belief which is, of course, nonsense. The experience of a number of men, who I know and who have undergone circumcision for medical reasons, report that there is no difference sexually.

Personally, as a gay man I have seen a fair number of cocks, both circumcised and uncircumcised and find they all look pretty alike when erect. With one exception, and that is for guys who have a tight foreskin which does not retract when erect which is, in my opinion, unsightly and makes for bad sex. In Ireland, it seems boys are not checked for this condition, called phimosis, and some men continue throughout life with a tight foreskin. In other countries it is much less common as most countries check boys for this problem and rectify it.

Male circumcision should be the choice of the individual, and I am completely opposed to the routine circumcising of infants for any reason other than medical.

I had it done for medical reasons and I can say it's had no impact on sensitivity etc. However I don't see any reason to get it done if you don't need to, it'll be an uncomfortable couple of weeks afterwards and as for 'aesthetic' objections, let's face it knobs are not the most attractive thing in the world anyway, foreskin or no foreskin.

I had a boyfriend from Australia who had been circumcised at birth, he thinks it's child cruelty of the worst order. I agree.

that's not what you said. You said : "Aesthetically speaking it looks vile.". I have a problem with that because I know there are a lot of lads who are probably reading this thread, who need to get this op done for medical reasons but are too worried/embarassed to see their doctor. All your comment does is reinforce those fears. I doubt you'd say the same thing to someone who had a mastectomy. Anyway, for every person who makes a comment like yours, there's a girl who hates the look of an uncircumcised guy. Aesthetics don't come into it. For the record, I don't condone circ'ing all boys at birth.

I'd second this. Unless you have a problem that is causing discomfort, then circumcision will hardly improve things. If you do have a problem then naturally it will. If you have a fully functioning foreskin then circumcision will likely reduce sensation. Stands to reason and research. The glans becomes toughened(keratinised) when exposed permanently and you would also be losing the sensitive erogenous tissue that is present in the foreskin itself.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

thanks for all the comments.... (and im glad i wasnt the first person to use the word "knob" 1!)

just to make a few things clear.....

    1) yes mine is extremely tight.
    2) no, it doesn't retract

(ie. im NOT thinking of this purely to make it look nicer....or for sex to feel better. im not that naive!! im thinking of it becoz it can sometimes be very very uncomfortable)

And I agree with Jawlie I do think my current situation unsightly. And I feel very conscious about it when im with someone.......not that anyone has seemed to have a problem with it (altho 1 or 2 ppl have commented on it over the years)

Well then you fall into the phimosis/tight foreskin category. In that case Whybother1's post is the one to take on board. I would say circumcision should be the final(as it's non reversible) choice. Stretching, steriod cream would be the first ports of call.

I think that circumsised penis' look quite well acutally :) No harm in getting it done if you're sure it's what you want to do - but I'm not sure you'll feel any more pleasure?

if he's getting it done because of problems retracting the foreskin then he DEFINITELY will feel more pleasure. It's like taking off a thick skin condom. Well not, like, mad thick or anything, I mean I wasn't deformed or a....ANYWAY, the result is the same whether it is achieved through steroids, stretching or surgery.

Well, then, go do something about it ... sex is way too much fun (even solo! :D ) to be missing out, even on part of that, or experiencing discomfort. As the lads said, why not check out the other options first before opting for circumcision, but if ultimately that's the only option which works, better to get it over with and out of the way.

Best of luck with it! :)

There's no point in suffering in silence. It's truly amazing what people will put up with rather than remedying it simply because they are embarrassed. Make an appointment to see your GP with the intention of referral to a surgeon.

Circumcision is popular these days. In fact, there was a large thread recently here in PI about circumcision, so you might want to have a try to dig it up and read the advice present in it.
