From boot-up: keep tapping F5 (May be F8 on some config's) - boot from Safe Mode. Do you get usernames there? Can you login?
How long has the issue been happening?

Cheers man... here is an update

I got in on f8 then safe mode and then control panel and User accounts..

NOW I am getting No account and 'g_Navigator' is null or not an object

So I cant enter any new users or access any older ones ???

    Start - Run - sfc /scannow
(If it works: remember to do a Windows Update)

Again, when was the issue first noted?
If that fails, does he have a retail XP disc or is it an OEM (Supplied with the computer by Dell, etc. and says OEM)?

g-navigator is null or not an object is sometimes related to displaying thumbnails, which is controlled by shimgvm.dll (and of course you were looking for a user account which is indicated by a thumbnail).

    Try the following:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
In the command prompt window type the following

    regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

A window should pop up saying it has been DllUnregisterServer in shimgvw.dll has succeeded or something similar.

    Then type
    regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
A similar window should pop up again.

Let me know how you get on....

That all worked but didnt cure the problem !

While in safe mode do a complete system scan with anti-virus and if you have them ad-aware or some other spyware monitor. A bit of googling seems to suggest it could be down to a virus or malware. Best to do this to make sure the system is clean before thinking about a System Restore.

No disk ! and I am having problems running scandisk as I cant get back into safe mode after following the steps above :)

Ok. After much googling, there seems to be two possible solutions.

    1) Fresh install

    2) Try and do a System Restore to before the problem happened. If this works then do as Karoma suggested (Start - Run - sfc /scannow) and then do a Windows Update. Also do a complete system scan with anti virus and anti-spyware.

    Yes they do.

Try and do option 2 first though. Leave option 1 as a last resort.

The System Restore won't make you lose any files. It will just undo any changes that may have led to this predicament. Good luck and post back and let us know. Or if you have any more questions.

Excellent news. Glad it worked out for you. Please though, make sure you do a full scan of your computer for viruses and spyware. Also update the computer fully from Windows Update to try and prevent it from happening again.
