    Hi,

We are looking for new members to join the combined "Ireland" team for distributed computing. This is where you allow the unused processor time on your computer to be used to work on a scientific project of your choice.

These projects cover such areas as Climate Prediction, physics, drug therapy's, searching for life outside our planet etc.

We have brought together most of the Ireland teams on the various projects and have set up a web site for everyone to communicate. http://www.irelandboinc.com

If you think you might like to join and contribute some computing time to your favourite project please just click on the link above or my sig below for more information.

If you have any questions please just let me know.

Wouldn't it be good to see Irish Teams listed high up on the world leaderboards where they deserve to be.

    Shane

What exactly is involved? Elaborate more.

All the projects run using a program called Boinc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOINC which allows your computer to process data from the project of your choice.

Many other people will also be allowing their computers work on that project and the scientists get the benefit of a huge amount of computing power and you get to help the project which you identify most with or which you feel most deserving.

The program runs in the background and only when the user is idle so does not interfere with you, but you can also view it progress if you wish and track your participation on many of the project websites or your teams website if you decide to join on.

It is a very active community with hundreds of thousands of people running the seti@home project which is only one of about 30 projects to chose from.

The main site for the software is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and will have lots of links for more information.

The Ireland combined team has only been formed over the last couple of months but we have managed to push it to 164'th in the world and looking to push it higher.

Have a look around, drop over to our website and let me know if there is anything i can help you with.

    Cheers

    Shane

A perfect time to start again.

We are not the Top team in Ireland and are 163rd in the world.

Would be great to see up in the top 100 teams in the world.

Yes, same as myself - ran it on two-three pcs from July 1999 to July 2005. I eased off from there. Truth is - those Pentium 4's and D get so hot and bothered when working under full load. So now I tend to rest them (main pc is a Pentium D 820). I even ran it on my p4 laptop - it's so dusty now - that the loud hoover fan, that it is, is on even when Seti is not running. :D

Yes, I like quiet pcs these days. But maybe someday I might get interested again.

The current Boinc software lets you chose how much of the processor to use, when and for how long.

I have a couple of computers that would run too hot if allowed run at full tilt.

Every bit helps and would be great to having you on the team.
