Csrss.exe and spoolsv.exe causing 40% cpu usage

As it says in the title. When the system is idle, cpu usage is running at around 40%. I've ran avg, ad-aware and c-cleaner and nothing notable has come up although avg did pick up a generic5.iji in google desktop but seeing as I never use it I promptly got rid of it but this still hasn't fixed it.

I can't end csrss.exe as it's a system process and as for spoolsv.exe, I can end it but it just comes back a minute later. It's really irritating. I can't be 100% but I think it happened after I installed Stalker so maybe this fooked something up.

    My spec are:
    Core 2 Duo T7200 @ 2ghz
    2GB ram
    Windows xp media centre.

Are there any documents in the printer queue? You can stop the printer spooler and start it again, see if that does anything. Start->Run->services.msc in the box, scroll down to Print Spooler. You can disable it altogether as well. It should let you stop the service from a link in the left window pane.

As for Csrss.exe, MS Knowledge base says it could be a corrupt user profile, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555021

Well your HJT log is as clean as a whistle. I thought it might be a backdoor infection but doesn't seem to be. I would recommend doing this though

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Think we can rule out being malware related, DSS will tell us for sure. And no need to use code boxes for the logs.

All right lads cheers for the response.

@Ruu - Thanks for that I stopped spoolsv.exe and it hasn't come back. The weird thing is I've only used a printer once with my laptop and that was about 6 months ago so I can't really see why that was going wild.

The problem is that after I did that nvsvc32.exe is now taking up 15% (about the same as the printer spool was taking up). This never appeared before and I'm not doing anything graphics intensive. Very confusing.

Edit: nvsvc32.exe is back down to 0 so no need to worry about that.

@ActorSeeksJob - I didn't think there was anything weird in there but just thought I'd double check. I know there's no need too put it in code tags but I find it makes it easier to read. Here's the dss logs

Nothing there at all. By the way you should update your adobe reader, and remove your old versions of java. Sorry couldn't be more help !!

Don't worry about it ASJ, you did your best and that's more than enough. It looks like Ruu might be right and it's a corrupt user profile. It's down to around 30% mark which while not ideal will be fine for now. I'll probably format before I go back to college anyways.
