    Hey,

Just wondering what options i would have after repeats should I fail? I've heard I can take a year out and repeat at xmas/summer for about €100 but with no access to DIT facilities or I can repeat the year for around 2 grand. What i'm wondering is if i was to repeat the year would I have to repeat all my subjects or just the ones I failed at repeats?

    Thanks

I was always under the impression that you only have to repeat the ones you failed if you repeat the year.

totally depends on the course and it's school and depends on how many subjects you've failed too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭Stench Blossoms

Depends on how many subjects you have in total, and how many of them you failed.

I think its that if you fail more than half the course then you have to repeat them all.

I'm in comp. science. I had 3 exams at xmas (and 1 continuous assessment subject) and failed 1 and 6 at summer and failed 2 so i've failed 3/10 in total, and am repeating them next week but atm im not feelin too confident bout em so thought I better find out what my options after would be and knowing DIT i'd be waiting ages for an official response

Are you in 1st year or 2nd year?

If you fail less than 60% of your subjects you pay a discount price, and you can repeat the failed stubjects. I've been told that the price will vary from year to year and special circumstances can be taken in to account. You should get in contact with the head of your course or school after the repeats. I may have to repeat about half of my subjects next year if things go wron during the repeats, so I was given an estimation of about €1800 for half of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭grimm2005

hmmm, ok. I'm in first year. I presume that 1800 would include the 800 registration fee? or is that aswell as the 800?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Binomate

Yeah, that includes registration afaik. If it doesn't, I'm ****ed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

just so you know that 800 reg fee has gone up to 825 this year.

    programming, maths and problem solving

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Binomate

Ha! Minus the Programming, that's what I failed last year. Do you have Lawlor for Problem Solving? Studied hard for maths, did well enough and passed problem solving on compensation.

I can't remember. Does anyone know how Lawlor goes about his repeat exams? I've heard mixed reviews and I can't remember from last year. His exams are usually the exact same as they were to some previous year, but I've also heard that his exams are a lot harder for the repeats. Anyone any info?

Lawlors repeat exams for 2nd year are completely different to the summer exams and require alot more studying. Last year in the repeats he had a question on link lists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭grimm2005

yeah, i had lawlor for problem solving and algorithm design. He seems pretty reasonable. he bumped me up a few marks for algorithm design to allow me to pass.

Programmings my main worry. I got pretty useless at it in the second semester. Realisticly i shuda put more work into it but im hoping i can scrape a pass in the repeats.

Maths im not too sure about. I think if i just go over the notes and do the whole summer paper i should be able to get thru it.

On a side note I also failed the continous assessment module communications and personal development and submitted a repeat paper last march. I put a lot of work into it though so I'm definite i passed that (when i emailed her bout it she said shed have them marked by august but i havnt heard ne thing since so i presume thatll come with my repeat results)

Hey man, am also in 1st yr and failed maths, prob solving and business, i think prob solving shud be ok coz if u look at xmas paper on lawlors page and the 2006 one most questions are identical lol, also theres a full solution up there, im just learning that paper and hoping lol,

i've heard problem solving autumn papers are a lot tougher so if you're banking on just learning the summer paper then you may be out of luck.

would it not be an idea to at least get the autumn papers for the said subject and judge it by that?

 What autumn papers? I passed algos at summer just failed prob solving at xmas, if u check his homepage http://www.comp.dit.ie/rlawlor/Prob_Solv/index.html u can see down @ the bottom the exams have simular questions, i dont see why his rpts would be any different, its only a 1hr 30min exam so its not too long :o

autumn papers = repeats as you sit them in autumn, a more PC term if you will ;)

If I was a lecturer i'd do what he supposeidly does and make repeats harder.

He does have a good system with the summer exams in that they are very similar to previous years.

He use to have his autumn papers up online but they don't seem to be there anymore so it's hard to make the comparrison.

Coz the semester craic is new he prob took em down, in fairness i dont see why he'd change his act for repeats but nyways well see on the day

Lawlor is known for having harder repeats.

Don't blame him though because his summer exams are simple if you put even a small bit of effort in.

If it was identical to his 2006 paper then why didn't you pass?

I can't understand how people fail subjects like this which are simple to pass with the slightest bit of studying.

TBH your in for a shock if you make it into second year.

Well we clearly didnt know until after :P And due to the fact it was semesterised:
    Sem 1: Prob Solving
    Sem 2: Algos
It would have made it less obvious the past yrs were the same, considering all the study i did was off his notes to begin with,

    hey

Along with half of my class i failed exams in my second yr but that was before it was semesterised so we had to repeat the whole exam so count your self lucky as with semesterisation you only have to repeat the module you failed. i failed 3 in the summer and passed 2 of them in the repeats. so i repeated the 1 exam externally for 100 euro. I passed this in the summer exams. some of my friends failed 5 and one failed 7 exams. if you repeat internally you have to pay full fees (as the 800 we pay is aparently 'free education' subsidised by the government) which was around 2500 or 3000. as it is semesterised you may only have to pay half this, im not sure, how ever if you fail 1 exam from 1st and 1 from 2nd semester you will have to repeat both semesters so prob will have to pay full fees. i think if you have your notes your better of to do it at home yourself and pay the 100 euro!

some of my friends passed in the summer and others failed again and had to do the autumn repeats (for the 4th time) for another hundred euro. most people passsed it the 4th time, Three people were let into 3rd yr even though they failed one exam so in 3rd yr they had to sit their 3rd yr exams and one 2nd yr exams, they were not aloud recieve their 3rd yr results til they passed the 2nd year exams which unfortunally one girl didnt. but one of them got a 1st in his finals last yr. just put the head down and try to pass now but to be honest failing them twice and passing the 3rd time was the best thing that happened to me cos i was soooo lazy and when i went back i was way more motivated and did very well, im now doing a PhD, so there is hope for us all....

P.S. You can get the repeat papers in the library,

hey, have friends in dcu that failed just an exam, no you wont have to repeat labs, just exams failed which means you can repeat externally for just the price of the exam normally about 100 euro. if you failed labs that would mean you would have to go back and pay full fees cos you would have to be in college. hope that was of help.

I have a headache after reading all of that. Wouldn't it be just soooooooooooo much easier for people to just study, pass exams, have the whole summer off, study, pass exams, have the whole summer off. And pass through each year without all the above hassle. I had 3 repeats in my second year. I passed them and vowed never to have another summer of worrying about repeats again. Not worth it.

hey, i see some 2nd year 228 people are posting on here:

Yep, and with Data Comms you won't start until after christmas. It means you won't be able to do work placement though. (Well thats if you want to attend classes -which you should). I have all the notes though so just give me a shout if ya need them.

That might not be the case. The exact rules for carrying subjects are:
    DIT wrote:
b)Candidates who fail to satisfy the requirements of a) in their entirety may, at the discretion of the Progression and Award Board, be permitted to proceed to the following stage, by the process of Compensation, provided they have achieved an overall average mark of at least 40% where the individual marks contributing to that average are weighted according to the number of ECTS credits attributed to each module.

c)Normally, candidates will not be permitted to proceed to and take a module until they have satisfied the examiners or gained exemption from any designated module which is a pre-requisite for that module as prescribed in the programme of study.

d)The Progression and Award Board may at its discretion permit a student to progress to the next stage of a programme, where the candidate has obtained not less than 50 ECTS credits, in which case re-assessment opportunites will be provided during that next stage

So basically carrying a subject is allowed at the discretion of the Progression and Award Board. If you fail a subject at the repeat and want to carry it then your best bet is to plead your case with the course Chair (Brendan O'Shea for 228). He has alot of sway in allowing a student to carry a subject from one year to the next.

If there are any problems you can pop into the union offices opposite the snackery and have a chat with the Student Support Advisor.

    Thanks for the replies lads.

I did quite well overall in the other subjects, i'd say I averaged at least 40%. Dunno if I even failed the repeat, but I'm worried.

Anyway I'll get onto my man O'Shea if things go bad! Cheers!
