Need advice: reasonable places to stay in London and Paris

    Hi all,

My GF and I will be spending four nights in London in late September and subsequently four nights in Paris. Anyone have some advice on where to stay? Specifically hotel / hostel names and the websites to use to book the rooms?

I have stayed in Paddington (London) before in one of the dozens of family-run three star hotels there - great location but the accommodation itself was fairly poor. Don't want to spend more than €80 per night, €90 at most, which restricts us I know. We need a fairly clean room (no need to be big), clean private bathroom and a good location (close to the tube, no need to be right in the heart of the city but around Paddington would be great!) - hostels are fine as long as they have nice rooms for couples.

Same requirements for Paris, a city I don't know at all (no idea about suitable areas to stay) as I haven't been back since my school tour at the age of 16!

    Thanks all,
    Paul

For Paris I use www.parisby.com to choose a hotel - there are plenty in your price range. Check the reviews of the hotels that appeal to you on www.tripadvisor.com before booking. My favourite area is the Latin Quarter. After sight-seeing all day it is nice to be able to step out of your hotel and be close to the action without having to take public transport late at night. The only way to stay in a nice hotel in London that does'nt cost a fortune is by using www.priceline.co.uk. You may be able to get a 3* fairly central hotel for your budget. www.biddingfortravel.com is an invaluable site for checking priceline winning bids - just scroll to the London hotels section. The Bastille area of Paris is also supposed to be good for nightlife and is a nice area to stay with a neighbourhood feel about it.
Hope you have a great time in both cities.

Go to ebay.ie and search for 'paris hotel'. You'll see a few 4 and 5 star hotels very cheap. Just email the hotel (email address on auction page) and check for availability for the relevant dates.
I stayed in the radisson boulogne for a seriously low price.

FYI, with the world cup on in France until the end of October be prepared to struggle for available accomodation in Paris

A few years ago I stayed in a twin room in Le village hostel.
    http://www.villagehostel.fr/
It was perfectly fine, clean, safe and it had its own bathroom. I paid about 60 euro a night. It is not in the centre of Paris. It is in Montmartre, a suburb up north. The Metro is just down the road from it and will get you into the centre in no time. The Sacré-Cœur is just up the road and is a nice place to hang out during the day. You should also check out the streets behind The Sacré-Cœur.
