Short time lurker, first time poster here.

I'm looking to buy a half-decent bike for getting in & out of work, and the occasional jaunt. Nothing off-road.

I've been offered a Scott Voltage YZ2 from a friend of a friend. He's let me take it on the work trip several times this week, and I like it. It seems light enough, suitable size and quite sturdy, which is important as I am quite heavy. It's got knobbley tires at the minute, but I would get those swapped out for road tyres if I do buy it.

Before I hand over any cash - I'd like to get any opinions you guys might have on this brand/model.

I'm 6 ft 2, 18 st+, and the round trip journey is about 14 miles. Reliability and sturdiness are more important to me than speed & good looks.

A pikki of the bike would help....

How much is he offering for it?

to be honest, I've read the online reviews and mostly they are full of jargon and arcane knowledge that goes over my head ... I'd really value an impartial opinion from someone here who uses one of these bikes.

Asking price is 250, but we haven't entered the haggling stage yet.

Sorry trout can't help. My knowledge of MTB's is fairly limited. One thing I do know is that if you are using it for commuting can you lock-out the suspension forks and, as you say, get yourself some slicks.
