I've just been told that my car horn and hazards are beeping and flashing 3 times every hour or so. The car is parked in our car park and the receptionist just told me it has been doing this since lunch.

I looked around the car and all seems fine, I have no alarm but have an immobilizer and central locking.
I'm also having trouble with the passenger side door not registering it is closed and keeping the interior lights on for the past week or so.

Does anyone have any idea what this beeping and flashing is about?

Are you sure the car doesn't have an OEM alarm (ie factory-fitted)?

I don't believe it does, I bought it second hand and there was no alarm advertised. How could I tell if it has an alarm? (Short of giving it a kick)

Probably the easiest way is to bring it to a good auto electrician. My guess is that the car does have an alarm, and that the door sensor problem is setting it off. Are you in Dublin? I find Hamiltons, off Camden St, pretty good & cheap.

    Cheers,

Just to wrap this up, it looks like I do have an alarm, but by pressing the lock button twice on the remote it deactivates it so I won't be annoying the neighbours.

    Thanks!

It's great to see a happy ending on the motor forums :D

If your interior lights are staying on, the problem lies with the sensor in the door lock mechanism. Disabling the alarm only stops the visual signs of the problem, not the underlying cause.

This is a common problem with the Mk4 Golf, might be worth bringing it to a independent VW specialist? Should be a cheap enough fix.

yep, the double locking is just the short term fix, I know a guy who is great with Golfs so I'll bring it to him and hopefully he can replace the sensor without having to replace the whole locking mechanism.
