I suspect there are people around here who have many, many more bikes than they need. Step forth and be counted, crazies!

(Okay, okay, I have four myself: three at my house and one on "permanent loan" to my girlfriend. Truth be told, if I had more space, I'd probably have more bikes...)

I have two. A road bike (Spesh Allez Elite) and a hardtail MTB (Kona Chute)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,570 ✭✭✭daymobrew

I only have two - 2001 Specialized Rockhopper, my commute bike, and a 2005 La Pierre Francais De Jeux road bike for duathlons and long cycles. Just the right amount.

I have two cheap mountain bikes for commuting around Dublin. Find it very handy if one breaks down, needs a service or something comes up and it's locked elsewhere.

Or more precisely I had two until one was stolen from Stephens Green and the other had two spokes cut (out of malice) when some scumbags couldn't cut the lock. Not a good weekend.

    A mere three:

    Trek 5000 road bike
Specialized Sirrus Elite tourer/commuter (hybrid converted to drops)
Dawes Discovery 201 hybrid for about town/locking in dodgy areas (read: Dublin)

However I am planning a new proper tourer, probably traditional lugged steel type. And considering a mountain bike.

    2. Orbit Orion Commuter Hybrid and a clapped out old Raleigh that may someday become a fixie project.

    Four.

A 2000 Trek 820 MTB: "inherited", first city bike, incredibly well-built frame but calling it a "mountain bike" is a bit much (no suspension). The bike has never forgiven me for taking it up the trails on Three Rock. More than decent for wet city riding or if someone throws some pebbles in front of you.

A 2003 Ridgeback Genesis Day:02 hybrid: eBay, the MTB got too slow, this is rocket fast in the city, great handling, very fast bike, loved this bike

A 2003 Basso Devil road racer: club sale, my introduction to racing bikes, decent winter trainer and introductory racer, served me well but a little ugly, currently in pieces as its my "rebuilding project"

And finally, my brand new pride and joy...

A 2007 Trek Madone 5.5 SL road racer: eBay, carbon fibre, full Dura-Ace, featherlight and gorgeous.

Albeit I'll probably sell two of them to generate funds for customisation of the other two.

    2:

Spec Hardrock XC rigid. Perfect for around town until the 26x1.25's i put on it went to sh1te. Bought 26x1.5's to replace them, then when i pumped them up they expanded to 26x2.2's- i swear to god, before this it was so easy to cycle, now it's like towing a trailer or something. Never buying Geax tyres again

Focus Variado Expert. My baby. Fvcking love this bike. First roadie (of many i hope) It's so bloody fast. Only problem is if I go over a bump it feels like the wheels are going to shatter.

I have three mountain bikes: an old Dyna Tech for my Tacx trainer that lives in the shed and rarely get used, one for the road built from scratch on a Sintesi Halebop frame which gets regular use, and one for the mountains built from scratch on a Klein Attitude frame and that lives in the attic and never gets used.

Ah, I've seen lycra riders on that bike around the city. It does look pretty funky tbh, although the people that ride the ones I've encountered have been light-breaking arseholes with little respect for other cyclists.

Although since you've got a sense of humour, so I'm sure that doesn't apply to you :)

    3:
Specialized Tarmac Comp '05 - to which my heart belongs
Specialized Hard Rock Comp '05 with 1.5's- which currently serves my commute and sometimes finds itself out training [mostly training a hump into my lower back!]

And in the market for another lower spec roadie for fairweather commute

I thought cycling was an enviromentally friendly sport, but we are as consumist as the rest!

I just have one, that does everything from commuting to touring to training to "racing". It doesn´t do downhill though! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭Itsfixed

just because most of us have between two and ten bikes doesn't disqualify us from being environmentally friendly, surely? Materialistic, maybe, but still green.

I like cars, for instance, but couldn't justify owning more than one or two. Money no object and wife permitting (not likely) i would have happily house at least 10 bikes in the shed. I'd have to get a bigger shed though.
