Gym and older people

A local gym recently gave a prize of 6 months free membership to the person who had clocked up the most hours in the gym in the previous 6 months. My dad won the prize, at all of 68 years of age! He spends at least half an hour in there every day, 7 days a week and has been doing so for about 4-5 years now. He's a tank of a man with muscles most* men can only dream of! Now if only some of his energy and enthusiasm would rub off on his fat arshed daughter here!

I'm not really sure what the point to my thread is... just a proud daddy's girl bragging I think. Do you guys see many older people in the gym?

*disclaimer.... some members of this board excepted of course:D

Very few to be honest, there's one or two regulars in my gym but then again I work out in evenings mostly and I 'd reckon most older folks do their workouts during the morning or the early PM, if they're retired or whatever.

I don't really see any old people in mine, but one day I did see a guy in the weights section, who was at least 65 years of age and probably older. Looked fit mind, but at the same time you automatically sort of think....you know. :D

He was lifting almost 80kg on the bench without a bother on him and I was just staring in shock for about 5 minutes.....

fair play to him littlebug - you're rightly proud.
i train in the dublin postal sports club and they have lots of older people training during the day.
I know the new tallaght leisure centre has a good few older members too.
i think older people are far more canny when selecting a gym - they tend to find the best gyms for maximum value for their money.

It's a pity gyms are the reserve of fit mid twenties males (and I say that as a fit mid twenties male) when housewives, children, and the elderly need it more in their day to day existence than white collar workers.

littlebug - fair play to your dad!

I worked out with a 65 year old former powerlifter a few weeks ago and besides all the helpful hints he gave me, he outlifted me 2:1 on every lift. A humbling experience!
