usually nothing unless its a plant or animal >_> you're allowed to bring an amazing amount of merch back with you. But as for tax values i have no idea.

Should be standard Irish VAT rate I think. Could be wrong though

Anything over €40 is liable for 21% VAT, 3-4% (not entirely sure on that) import tax and handling (depends how it is being delivered) as far as I know. Note: adding 'gift' on the package won't avoid you getting caught. :)

If it's an ebay purchase and your seller has marked it as gift or simular or for a low value ( which lots of sellers do) you might not get charged anything.

It also depends on the method of postage, I know some of the big companys have their own customs devisions and scan/check everything.

I have a reciept somewhere, if I find it I'll post up the % for tax/handling etc.

Yes its from ebay, and this message is on the auction page
We ship WORLDWIDE! For ALL international packages, we require shipping insurance and a telephone number for the customs forms. Order processing for international shipments may take 2-3 business days. Do not ask me to place a lower value on the customs forms, it is illegal and will void proper insurance coverage for the shipment. Please contact your local postal authority for information on import taxes. I do not know your country's tax regulations, that is your responsibility.

Does that mean i will defiantly have to pay customs/tax etc?

    Shipping is with
    USPS Priority Mail International
if that makes any difference, i dunno?

brace yourself for the call from customs!

Whats the value of the item you've bought?

I'm still just considering buying it ;)

    Its around $250 :o

well you need to weigh up whether including shipping costs and a potential 25% increase in cost due to customs and handling is still saving you money on the purchase vs if you were to get it here. If It's roughly even I'd still get it on ebay and if customs miss you (which is possible) take the saving as a bonus.

OK thanks for the advice, so if customs gets it...they send me a letter saying i have to pay X ammount to them before they give the package to me?

I've spent 1000's on ebay and been caught once, a camera. They called me and said that they had my package and the cost was something like €36 incl. customs and handling, I accepted to pay and when they dropped the package I payed the delivery dude. no probs.

make sure you get the invoice signed by the dude to say its payed if you do use this method.

Having a relative work as a Customs Officer, I know that they aren't really interested in enforcing VAT, they are concentrating almost purely on drugs, alcohol and tobacco. If it's something insanely big then yes they'll nab you on that but they leave lots through (you'll only be caught if it's a very, very quiet week for them)

Customs feck it up. I spent more on delivery/customs from thinkgeek.com than the products I bought.

I thought this thread was going to be about dancing at the crossroads and giving gifts in brown envelopes!

Sent by USPS = unlikely to be charged
Sent by UPS = nearly guaranteed you'll be charged
    DHL/TNT/etc are somewhere in between

Always factor in VAT+Import tax into your large online international purchases.

I bought a new bass from Japan a few months back, paid about €160~ in customs+VAT. An post throw on an extra €5 too for handling.

You'll probably be sent an invoice with the customs charge on it. Weight plays a factor too.

Higher the value, more you'll get burned. Friend bought a dress from LA online, price was around €80, they charged her €50 for shipping (???), the VAT and tax together was €70...

How customs work with parcels via An Post.

    1. An Post holds the parcel.
    2. Customs send a letter saying "You may owe us taxes. Send us the invoice for the parcel so we know how much to charge you"
    3. You send invoice to customs
    4. Customs send you a nice bill for import tax and 5 euro handling fee (An Post have to get their cut, y'know). They instruct you to pay An Post all the money.
    5. Interesting conversation at post office.
Me: "I need a postal order for this amount of money, please"
Post Dude: "No problem. Who do you want to make it out to?"
    Me: "An Post"
Post Dude (with WTF look on face) : "Oooookay."
    6. Send postal order to address in letter.
    7. Parcel delivered.

    Easy.

i get stuff from there once about every month, if the box is bigger than a shoe box and is worth more than €140 you should be taxed about 25%, thats all there is.

QFT, though I think DHL are close on UPS in this regards.

Packages from America are alway hit hard.
