If the car fairy came tomorrow ...

...and told you you could have any car you wanted, what would you get?

ahh ...hang on ...hang on ... before everybody goes rushing off, orderering Ferrari F50's and whatnot ...there are "terms and conditions"

The car fairy is a bit mean, actually and has the following conditions:

You have to keep the car for ten years ...you will get no other car in that time and you can't sell or swap it either.

It will be your only car. Other than using public transport, all your transportation (now don't forget ...wife ..kids...dogs...shopping  ) will have to be done with this car (no second car for the wife either)

You have to foot all bills yourself ...tax, insurance, fuel, service, spare parts, no help from the fairy there.

    Now ...what would you get?

    ('m still pondering)

Not a bad choice but if you are going to have to keep the car for 10 years why start out with one that is already 10 years old?

I reckon an Audi A6 Allroad. Very practical, reasonably economical but still good performance with 2.7 diesel, a certain amount of off-road ability without sacrificing much in the way of handling, good image/badge without being too ostentacious, looks good and won't date too much....would be quite happy with that for ten years...

Change of mind... from an RS4 to the new Volvo S80 - the V8 one of course :) Slightly more practical.

Being cautious and forward planning I'd have to go with one of these as ugly as they are, it's the only luxury car that'll cover nearly all eventualities of 10 years of life's challenges, probably a 4 year old and 2 dogs as well...if it comes to it!!

I just have a weakness for the old school of 'modern' Mercs, w201, w124. :)

    E60 535d or E92 335i or E30 M3 evo 2.

    Probably pick E30 M3 first.

Hmm ..I like the Audi Allroad idea

    Is there a 1.9 or 2.0?

Otherwise I might go for its poorer cousin ...the one of big boot fame :D

Where I grew up (several decades ago) there was a bus or a train that the non car owning party could comfortably take to work.

    :D:D:D

(I just wanted to avoid answers where people opt for that F50 and get a Hyundai "tragic" for "the wife")

I was tempted by this but the running costs and such would make it un-doable for me. If money were no object for running as well as acquiring then this would be a seriolus contender

Its the truck used in transformers. I just think it looks really cool and I'd love to have one. Fuel consumption be damned.

Sensible choices of either a 535d or new S-Class diesel.

    Non-sensible either a CL63/65 or and RS6 Avant :)

    This is a tough one...

I'd probably have to think reliability first as it has to last 10 years so i'm thinking german.

Fuel prices will be pretty high in 10 years so low litreage. Also this will save on tax.

But I can have any car! Hmm...

I'm going to go with highish cost and get a terrano or x5... Ok Terrano! So when is it being delivered??

Skoda. Superb is a strong contender but the Octavia has a huge boot. Both have orbit altering torque from thrusty 1.9 TDI engines.

Golf 1.4 Sportline is another favourite. Very fast according to a source.

Toyota Auris or Avensis. Strata spec. Luna doesn't hack it. If only I could live with the excitement of the driving experience.

Nice Choice Steve. I'll second that.....

However, chances of me getting insurance on it = 0.00% :(

Plus I couldnt afford the running costs. But it would be nice to just stand next to and swing the keys around my finger..... petrol indicator constantly in the red!

would it have to be a real car, or do concept cars count?

because if so I think I'd have the Golf GTI W12... one of a kind, will resell no prob in future.
