Theres no such thing as failing a medical.

Its just a check of your general condition, so that if you try to sue your employer in 5 years for e.g. causing high blood pressure through stress there will be a record stating that you did or didn't have high blood pressure in the first place.

regardless, you shouldnt go drinking the night before your medical. To me it shows something of someone's charachter. a medical is important. whats to say you wouldnt drink the night before an important meeting or something when working. it doesnt give a good impression.

Just reschedule the medical for a day or 2 later.

I'm going to assume you've never done a medical before

Usually a medical comprises of a health questionaire, an eye test, a BP test and (quite often) a drug test. Do you think its your line manager who's going to be administering your test? Hardly. If you do arrive stinking of drink they'll hardly bat an eyelid. Just make yourself presentable and have a box of tic tacs to hand.

The purpose of a medical is to assess your fitness for a job. It has nothing really to do with stopping you sueing a company down the line for developeing stress or any other related condiiton.

Medicals assess your health in two ways, thorugh the use of a medical history questionnaire and a physical exam. The purpose is to assess whether or not you are medically fit to the do the job being offered. I have come across in the past and I have also reccmended to clinets that job offers are not extended to persons based on their previous and current medical history.

If you can find out where the test is being carried and and give them a call and try to establish what is being checked for. Tell them about the stag and get their adivce. Or you could tell them you are scared of needles and are just checking to see if they are going to take blood during the examination. If they are not then the tests will be failry general and alcohol / drug tests will be urine based and in that case you could always bank some clean urine and bring it with you.......

Being hungover may not make a difference, but if a blood or urine alcohol test is done they make take a dim view of your alcohol levels, especially of the job is as a pilot or other safety critical type job. You may also fail the liver function test if you are really hung over:)

Passing drug tests has been discussed here before (can't seem to find the thread just now). That may seem like an obvious solution but you have to figure out a way of keeping the urine at body temperature coz you'll raise a few eyebrows if you hand in an icey cold vile.

That's not always the case. Two of my former employers made employees do a medical for non-screening reasons after offering them the job. The first employer had an environment involving physical work and hazards such as dust and chemicals. They wanted a medical on file for legal reasons. The other employer had an environment involving clean-room work and chemicals. They had a requirement for a full medical every N years to screen for potential effects and also for legal reasons.

If my memory of the OP's posts serves me correctly they work in pharma/lab environments. I would suggest that the medical will include a blood tests and potentially some spirometry if clean room work is involved.

Might I suggest some "unadulterated child piss" (Withnail & I):

Withnail: At some point or another I want to stop and get hold of a child.

I: What do you want a child for?

Withnail: To tutor it in the ways of righteousness and procure some uncontaminated urine.

    A urine filled plan?

leeroybrown, you are of course correct about post employment medicals. I should have made clear that I was talking about pre-employment medicals.
