Any opinions on this model? Something like the one here ?

Took one for a test drive and liked the ride, but I'm curious as to why theres a good few low mileage examples in the used car lots.

My sister bought a 2002 one a few months ago and she likes it. I cant tell you any more than that though.

We have an '02 from new as a 2nd car, I think many of them are 2nd cars hence the lower mileages. Ours is an 8v 1.4 which is too slow, but that one's a 16v which makes all the difference. Think the 1.4 litres are all 16v after late 2002/2003.

They are a lot of car for the money, safe, comfortable and reasonably practical. Ours is an XT with climate, ABS, auto wipers/lights, nice cloth etc.. I wouldn't think they wear high miles very well though, ours only has around 35k miles. No major problems - new coil pack recently, but the build quality is definitely lower than other similar sized cars - bits of trim have come loose for no reason (other than poor quality).

There was a problem with the indicator stalk (I think this was a recall in UK but not here to my knowledge) - replaced free by the dealer.

I'd recommend only if you can find an absolutely perfect low mileage example at the right price, but only if you are intending to do low miles and treat the car well - it won't stand up to abuse.

Reputations are there to be broken.... but that said I would be doing 70odd miles a day up and down the M8 to and from work, so I'd hope that it would be to stand up to 16k+ miles per year!

Maybe you should consider diesel? There's a 1.6 110bhp model out I think from 2004 onwards

I've been too-ing and fro-ing between petrol/diesel since I first started looking at my next purchase. I'm finding it hard to decide on the potential fuel savings V cost of ownership [capital cost/motor tax/services etc]. I hear that the 307 16V 1.4 gives between 40-45mpg, but I also know that the PSA HDI is an extremely efficient runner also...

You did ask for opinions. Waste of time posting and then simply dissing a negative view.

Check the usual review sites. Parkers and Honest John.

"Shocking 4th from Bottom of 100 models for reliability in Auto Express 2002 survey. Petrol models average for breakdowns and faults but poor for problems; diesels average for breakdowns bur poor for problems and faults in 2003 Which survey. 3rd from bottom out of 137 models in 2003 Top Gear survey. 307 3rd bottom model in 2004 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey. I didn't diss the negative view. What I ment was that a brand/model reputation does not always apply to each make of car.

    I had a 2004 307 Midnight. Bought one brand new to replace a 2002 307.

There's a big difference between the 1.4 16v engine in the 04 model and the standard 1.4 engine in the 02 model.

To be honest, I was already bored with the car after a couple of months and ended up at the end of 04 ordering an A3.

It's one of those cars that does exactly what it says on the tin. It's well specced and very comfortable. It's pretty good for long distance driving too, but you'll never be first from the lights and you won't be breaking any land speed records. Being a Peugeot, you'll be subject to relatively expensive parts and slow service.

Things to look out for are faults with switchgear, in particular the indicator stalk. The engine management software can play tricks too and we had an episode where the car wouldn't rev over 2000rpm. Car was taken back for almost 3 weeks while the fault was fixed. During that time we were given the HDI version, and I have to say, if we'd taken one of those in the first place, we'd have been happier. Extremely economical, we got to West Cork and back in it on roughly half a tank of diesel.

Very helpful. Thanks for that. What brand of car do you drive and ill tell you all of it problems if you like.

Anyway back to the question. The squealing brakes on the 307 and or 407 is just down to brake dust and or the pad vibrating in its caliper. Anti squeal copper grease on each pad will cure this noise. Bear in mind that bad quality brake pads will squeal more than better quality stuff.

But some cars are worse than others.

So a Peugeot 307 is on par with a Honda Civic? Yes, maybe a few problems with the Honda, but undoubtedly many more issues with the 307. Hence their very poor reputation.

The 307s are a pretty under-rated car in my opinion. As someone said above they are one of those cars that do exactly what it says on the tin. They wouldn't be my favourite car but they are good value, comfortable, pretty reliable and cheap enough to run.
