the original was a great game but the driving bits were too slow, it was like going out in so many Sunday drives, hopefully they will have speedier cars if there is a second one

There really weren't any 'speedier' cars in the 1930's. While I'll admit the driving scenes were annoying at times, they added to the realism and setting of the story. I hope its set directly after the original, or maybe the early life of Salieri.

The only real issue I would have liked to have seen changed with the driving was the "AI" of the police/enemies who could always magically catch up to you, even if you were in a much faster car, driving in a straight line.

Made it far to difficult to ditch the people in chases and made the game far too frustrating in parts.

Other than that, i didn't mind the speed or the handling of the cars too much, it made a nice change from the usual GTA style driving in games.

Loved the jazz sound track and the atnosphere of the game.

Yup I too have really really fond memories of the Pc version of this game. the Xbox edition of this game was dire and quite frankly depressing. I really do hope this comes true.

Highly anticipated sequel to deliver Hollywood movie style action and gameplay

New York, NY - August 21, 2007 - 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), today announced that it will publish Mafia 2, a sequel to the original Mafia title that sold more than two million copies worldwide and helped popularize the gangster genre. Featuring a deep mobster-driven narrative packed with both behind-the-wheel and on-foot action, Mafia 2 is the sequel fans have been clamoring for. The game is being developed by Illusion Softworks, developers of the original Mafia title, for next generation consoles and Games for Windows®.

Like the original Mafia title, Mafia 2 immerses players in the mob underworld of a fictitious late 1940's-early 1950's scenario. Players will easily become engaged in the game's cinematic Hollywood movie experience with strong, believable characters in a living, breathing city. By fusing high octane gunplay with white knuckle driving and an engaging narrative, Mafia 2 looks to be the industry's most compelling Mafia title to date.

"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."

Thank christ there'll be a windows version

Anyone else notice Max Payne standing at the back left of that 2nd pic :)

Anyway, this looks good. I hope they keep the same type of gameplay, without any stupid over the top scenes, and keep a real dark and gritty feel to it.

    just saw this now.

have to say i don't really get excited for that many games but mafia 2 is an exception.

the first game was surperb and was bloody well hard.

Sweet, hopefully the soundtrack will live up to the first one.

Also I hope they spend some time on the environments.

One of the things that made it far better in my opinion than the more recent godfather game was the lovingly crafted and diverse locations. I used to enjoy just going for a drive in the countryside and listening to jazz in mafia. In the godfather it was just one big grey boring city so bland and homogenous that it was hard to tell where you were at times.

Aw man, booting around the banked corners in that shiny coffin was so damn good.

Mafia was definitely one of the best games I've ever played. Over the moon a sequel is on the way!

looks like its moved away from the godfather style to the casino/goodfella's style
    which is fantastic.

I do hope as a nod to the original that one of the first few missions is the ending to the last game, which was set in 1960, it should have you being one of the hitmen that pull up in front of the house and gun Tommy down. Would be a great way to start the game

Now all I need to hear is the announcement of a hidden and dangerous 3 and i will be thrilled.

That would be an absolutly brilliant way to kick it off.
