I have a Compaq Pentium 4 laptop running Windows XP and the latest version of Windows Media player. When I try to play a DVD on it I get the message "a compatible DVD decoder is not installed". What do I do to fix this?

    Thanks

Download and install the K-lite codec pack.

Or install a specific DVD program lile Power DVD.

Just grab VLC media player, plays almost anything. I wouldn't advise installing K-Lite codec pack, more trouble than it's worth unfortunately.

Why so? I installed it on loads of mackines without any problems.
Unless you're referring to a version thats floating around thats riddled with spyware.

I find installing a bunch of codecs that you don't need a bit of a waste and some of those packs have caused registry entry problems for me in the past. I prefer to install the codecs as I go along and when I need them.

K Lite is the best codec pack on the net. It automatically fixes any registry settings it finds that are off to keep you from having issues.

The link above is not to the main K Lite site though - its to another site.

    The official site is here...
