Pretty much as the title says.

Looking to watch something dark and twisted. Doesnt have to be about cops
e.g i watched "The Cell" recently and thought it was ok.
I've also watched Old Boy - pretty fookin' twisted!

    All recommendations appreciated!

(This is my 100th post - not exactly earth shattering is it?!!)

The only film that comes close to Se7en in my books, is the excellent Korean film Memories Of Murder. I just cannot recommend it enough.

"The Game" is by the same director, pretty good, much tamer but really good, if you can stomach Michael Douglas for 2 hours!

If you liked Old-Boy, "Bittersweet Life" and "Lady Vengeance" are fantastic movies, there is some great films coming out of Korea at the moment so keep an eye on that genre in general if thats the kind of thing you like, twisted and macabre seem to be the watchwords of the Korean film industry!

Cheers guys, I'll check these recommendations out.

I'm into the dark and twisted stuff alright especially if it borders on the almost believable/ possible in real life.

On the dark and twisted note, and yet another Korean film, Save The Green Planet is one I also highly recommend. It's ****ing demented. Told a lot of people on here about this film, and they all seemed to absolutely love it.

    Dark & Twisted = Visitor Q ?

Bought this on the recomendation of someone here (Karl Hungus, I think) thought it was a fantastic piece of work. Dark and twisted, disturbing with a hint of humour thrown in.

Absolutely loved this film (even though I was probably sitting in the same spot an hour after the film ended thinking "WTF did I just see ?").

Be warned though, this film is not to everybodys taste.

Edit - Actually on recollection its nothing like 7 at all, sorry. Disregard.

    Sounds good to me!

I can't believe that I, or anyone else, actually enjoyed Visitor Q. It's just ****ed up on a whole other level. Any time I see someone saying how great it was, I think to myself that yeah, it was great, but how on earth could you like it? How did I like it?

I've never seen a film like that before.

Honestly, have a browse through the Plot Keywords on imdb.com and it reads like a list of the most depraved things possible: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290329/keywords

Have you seen Los Sin Nombre (The Nameless). Worth having a look if you are into dark & twisted movies. I really enjoyed this one, more psychological than twisted.

Hmm, haven't even seen this one myself. It sounds good though, I'll definetly have to have a look.

Oh, another recommendation I could give is Antibodies. Very good German serial killer film.

What the ****? I gotta watch this! What's the plot exactly? I find it difficult to believe
anal rape, necrophelia, prostitution, drug abuse, sadism, incest, 'object in rectum', murder and a breast massage
are part of any kind of cohesive plot, other than on some kind of deranged porn... I'm in. :D

Really though, I'd love something a bit twisted at the moment, I wouldn't mind a small no-spoiler review?

    Ill spoiler it anyway -
A family with some outlying problems such as a heroin addicted mother who is bullied by her son, a daughter turned prostitute and a father who is so obsessed with making his documentary that he neglects his family are all shown the error of their ways and how to pull together as a unit by a stranger known only as "The Visitor"

Hope that helps a bit, its available fairly cheap from most of the usual DVD retailers online. I've also seen it stocked in the foreign film section of quite a few xtra visions.

Moderator(s) - I deleted the original post promoting this film as I thought it wasnt what the OP was looking for, would one of you be so kind as to undelete it if possible, please ? Thank you :o

EDIT - Thanks to the undeleting mod

Ah, just have a look at the plot summary here. It's quite messed up alright. :o

****ed up doesn't begin to adequetly describe Visitor Q :)

I've said my piece on it before so I won't go into the same rant, but I didn't like it. I'm all for twisted movies, but there didn't seem to be any method to the madness so to speak. Just weird for weirdness' sake.

You'd be right. It is by no means a cohesive plot ;)

But, loads of people love it. As someone said above, not everybody's cup of tea.

Christ... it's on my list :p

No idea what to make of it. I honestly can't form an opinion. No doubt when I watch it my mind will get made up fast enough!

    Ay up
I'd seriously recommend Event Horizon, just for the sheer darkness of it all.
It's sci-fi/horror. Not very believable, but I'm nearly 21 and I'm still petrified of it.

Everyone seems to have latched on to the Det. Mills "this is some fnked up repugnant sh1t" vibe, but for the Somerset world-weary, persistence-of-evil aspect, I'd recommend Citizen X with Stephen Rea.

Yeah, i watched this film several years ago, very good.
Kinda forgotten it now. Must dig it out again.

Visitor Q really is nothing like Se7en. It's just extreme cinema. It's not particularly good, you'll find yourself either switching it off or continuing to watch but wondering why you're not switching it off. Miike went a bit over the top with this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,470 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

mmm Se7en will never be bettered, after it came out there was a rut of movies trying to imitate it films like Copycat (which I quite liked) and Kiss the girls and along came a spider (both with morgan Freeman). Fincher's Zodiac is similar with brutally re-created murders. But the movie that contains scequences that are two messed up for me to watch repeated viewings of is Jasper Noe's Irreversible which for the first 20 mins really and I mean really messes up your head, I know that you can rent it in Chartbusters if your interested in having a really messed up experience.

I saw it when I was like 12, so it scared half my bollocks off, and shares a place in my heart after that.
Still cant believe it was directed by the same guy who did Alien Vs. Predator

I've watched Irreversible before alright. Crazy film.
I often contemplated ripping the dvd and reconstructing and reversing the chapter order.

I suspect the film is actually weak enough without the whole reverse time angle.

Nobody said it was like Se7en, but the OP said he likes a lot of Dark and Twisted films (See here), and it sure doesn't get any more twisted than Visitor Q.

    Hmmm...something similar to Se7en.
I'd reccomend Saw 1 (not the other two).
It is similar to Se7en in some ways...it even says so on the box...'If you liked Se7en, this turns it up to eight!'

I bought Irreversible today out of pure curiosity. Can't mess me up that much :)

It will do its best to mess your head up, Noe uses one camera in the opening sequence that is constantly moving throug the La Rectum club and he also uses a strange noise on the soundtrack thats used by riot police that is supposed to make you feel quesy. Let us know what you think :)

You might like "The Machinist" with Christian Bale, not hugely dark, but it has a great sense of paranoia to it.

I thought it was good! From everything I'd heard I thought it'd be just a shock-tactic movie with loads of weird scenes, but it was a genuinely good movie.

The low-sound frequency coupled with the waving camera at the start made me feel slightly motion-sick alright though :)

Another one possibly would be Cube. Decent movie, nice premise, done pretty well.

    http://imdb.com/title/tt0123755/

"Six different people, each from a very different walk of life, awaken to find themselves inside a giant cube with thousands of possible rooms. Each has a skill that becomes clear when they must band together to get out: a cop, a math whiz, a building designer, a doctor, an escape master, and a disabled man. Each plays a part in their thrilling quest to find answers as to why they've been imprisoned."

I like your style! There's a sequel as well, Cube2: Hypercube and the prequel Cube Zero.

I'd also recommend The Ninth Gate which is similar in tone to Se7en: an occult mystery is the best way of describing it.
