Quick advice, got a new Computer

Hey, so my boss got a new laptop just there, i'm setting it up with office and stuff now...

Couple of questions:

1. It came pre-installed with Works, should I get rid of it first, then install office?

2. It came pre-installed with a McAfee Virus trial thing, should i get rid of it and get one of the freewares? Like Avast! or Avg?

Anything else i should do to get it up and running? I'm currently installing all the windows updates....

I would get rid of works and mcafee alright and then use a combo of AVG/windows defender/zone alarm

Concur, defo dump works in favour of office but no hurry in doing the virus once you keep McAfee up to date for the trial period, I find it pretty good. Then uninstall McAfee first before going with the free option of AVG.

zone alarm is unnecessary cos its new a new pc it will have windows firewall which is perfectly capabale if protecting the pc

windows defender is built into vista by default, (if it is vista)

and i concur with AVG, good program and runs happily on vista, well except while its updating!

As for works, yes uninstall then install office.

AVG is fine but all it does is provide anti-virus and thats it, no spam-killer, firewall, etc...
I don't think uninstalling works is going to free up a whole lot of memory

Because it is a resource hog and bloatware.

There could be problems with file associations (e.g. csv/text files opening in Works instead of Excel/Word/Notepad).

There are plenty of other free programs that do this.

i used "avg free" for a long time without any problems , or so i thought !!
just to be adventrous i changed my anti-virus to avast and ran a scan and it found a couple of trojan horse viruses, but in the end i had to get rid of avast as it clashed with zone alarm, i see the editor on download.com giving avg free a high rating, but to me it seems a bit poor on detecting problems,
