    Howdy all,
I'm looking to start learning drums but i haven't got the room for a full size kit. And my neighbours would kill me! So i'm thinking of getting an electronic kit to learn on.

I was thinking of this kit :

Does anyone have any experience with it ? What's it like? I'm looking for something that will allow me to learn the drum's and have a bit of fun. I read online that the mps100 is the same as the dd502 kit used in the this video and i think it sounds pretty good:

But i know nothing about playing yet.

Also, whats the best way to go about learning? Is it worth paying for lessons? Or should i just get a book/cd and start off with that?

Maplins do a great kit for someone who's just interested in learning, and not spending 700 Euro on a beginners kit. It's USB, so you'll need to connect it to you computer, but it does come with software to teach you how to drum too :

E-drums are hella-fun! No experience with the kit you showed, but I have a Yamaha that I have a lot of fun with. You can play with headphones and the neighbors will never know!

The best part about them is that, since the sounds are generally sampled, you'll be creating pro-quality tones. Of course, rhythm and tightness are your responsibility. :p

For something that inexpensive, you don't have much choice, but it'd still be nice to have a real drummer test one in a store for you to check pad response. Not all pads have a real drum-type bounceback, and I think that's the most important quality of the kit. Bounceback is very important when trying to do things like rolls.

One thing I would make sure of is that the kit you buy has a regular line-out audio jack on the drum module. This will allow you to hook directly to an amplifier or mixer if you ever play with other people.

If you find yourself really getting into it and spending a lot of time at it, I strongly recommend getting a heavy-duty triangular throne. Much easier on the sitz-bones, especially for old folks like me. :)

Learning drums on an electronic kit really isn't the best idea. As Rustar said, you don't get a proper feel for drums unless you play an actual acoustic kit, especially for rolls, and you really won't get a proper sense of dynamics either. What you could do is learn the basic rhythms, etc on the drums, but buy a proper practise pad to practise your rudiments on that. Not ideal, but an idea. Then again, I'm not a drummer, but know plenty of 'em :P

Out of curiosity, what is your price range?

Actually i just bought the millenium 100 this morning off thomann  . TBH i'm not willing to pay much more than 400e. I've never actually played drums before so i dont even know if i'll like it. I dont see that i have any other options really, like if i dont go for an electonic kit i'll never start. I dont have the room for a full size kit unfortunatly. :o All i want is something i can start off on. If i like it, great...i can sell the electronic kit and get something more serious.

Not what I said, Oh Lord C.
The gist of what I said was, "E-kits vary in quality".

As far as dynamics go, the technology of these kits is getting better all the time, with a fairly wide dynamic range based on hit pressure.

E-drums will never replace a real kit, but they'll do in a pinch, and they're excellent for home use.

    Hey,

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I'm looking for an elctronic drum kit to do some home recording with... don't want to spend too much and I guess I need something with a midi output or jack to plug into an interface..

    any recommendations??

also, whats the story with getting a brushes sound outta a snare on one of these??
    Cheers

Might as well resurrect this instead of a new thread!

Used to play acoustic down home (in the shtix!) where I had space and understanding neighbours.

However, I doubt my Dublin neighbours would appreciate it! So an acoustic is out of the question. Plus it'll be mainly for my own amusement, not gigging or anything.

For about €400-500 can I get a decent electronic kit? And where?

    Thanks! :)
